Please help! Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather cleaner-conditioner ruined brand new seats !

Any pics of your seats. Will be detailing a new 2014 TSX for my brother. Want to see what this destroyed seat looks like compared to his new seat.

It's greasy to touch and it shines unnaturally. It's like a shoeshine without added color.
Reminds of old cars in used car dealer lots where they put that mega-shine product on 20 years old leather to make it look presentable to certain type of the buyer.

I spent an hour wiping it off with Lexol cleaner. I didn't see immediate results , but next morning after Lexol treatment I saw considerable reduction of "shoeshined" effects.
I still have some unwanted shine left (on curves on bucket seat, to the right and left of middle console) , also some of the shine left around headrests , but it''s not as bad as it was the first day before Lexol treatment.

I probably could use a better cleaner for the purpose, but I just couldn't stand the looks and used whatever I had in my toolbox to get rid of the hideous look.

Since most of the shine that I complained about is gone (after an hour long treatment with another product) posting a current picture will not show what it was like after applying Megs wipes. But I tell you this: try this product on any old, dulled shoes you can find. You will what I am talking about. You will also see what I mean by "unnatural shine". A good leather has matte looks, you never expect a natural leather to have the looks of vinyl or plastic. Just get the product and try it on something you don't care about and see for yourself what it does.

Good luck!

I guess the seats weren't "ruined" then...

Straight from Autozones website.

This luxurious leather formula combines our cleaning, conditioning and leather protection formulas to safely and conveniently clean, moisturize and protect your fine leather. Our super luxurious textured wipe material is saturated with high levels of rich moisturizers, including aloe, to pamper your fine leather while protecting from spills, stains and UV damage.

  • Pre-saturated wipe conditions leather surfaces
  • Leaves a vibrant luster
  • Contains UV sunscreens to protect from wear and fading
  • Quick and easy application
  • Leather wipes
  • Quick and easy maintenance

Definition of luster

  1. soft sheen: a soft sheen of reflected light, especially from metal that has been polished gently
  2. shininess: a bright and shiny condition or tone
  3. splendor: the glory and magnificence of a great achievement

Now add vibrant in front of luster and you get "really shiny". You are misconstruing greasy with shiny. You can have one without the other.

You have been given a bunch of different ways to approach your problem none of them was good enough for you. You seem to only want to bash Meguiar's. So it is very apparent that nothing anyone says will be good enough for you.

The problem was not the product. The problem is you chose the wrong product for what you wanted. And then you improperly used it even with the instructions telling you to do a test spot. A Meguiar's rep even came in your thread and provided information to you all you could do was bash Meguiar's PR. All of the other people complaining about this problem also did not follow direction's and ended up with bad results also.

This thread should definately be locked. If not deleted. Just because you had a bad experience with a product designed to do something other than what you think it should have done does not mean that the manufacturer should be getting bashed for your inability to follow instructions.

Excellent break down. I would like to say one thing Meg's doesn't need to lie to sell products they have a strong following and their products are excellent when used the way they were intended.

I have addressed the points raised by the poster quoted above;

Here is my reply:

1. I did not misconstrue and confuse greasy with shiny. The product doesn't just give a lot of unnecessary, silocon-rich, Armorall type of shine that you would expect from a tire shiner, but it also makes seats very greasy and messy to touch. It took me about an hour of rubbing with Lexol to reduce the effects of this product on my seat, and even that took at least 12 hours to show positive results.
You may not wish to read my whole story or you may be motivated to misconstrue what I wrote, either way I have represented everything exactly as I observed.

2. Again, you don't seem to have taken a time to read my posts, but wrote your response based on your assumptions (or you willfully ignore what I wrote).

I have actually thanked everyone for good advise, it was defensive Meguiar's advocates who took it to personal level and started to attack my character that caused me to reply with more detailed clarifications and explanations of what this product did to my brand new seats. All the while I was trying to make sure that the focus of debate is the particular product and it's effects on a new leather, not my personal characteristics. Some people don't seem to like this approach and insist on making this an individual/personal/character disputing matter.

3. If you read my replies on two other threads (one of which I started) you will see that I have positive view of Megs professional grade products. Even in this thread I have repeatedly wrote that up to now I had only positive experience with their Professional grade exterior care products. It's their "Gold Class" that raises a lot of doubt about it having anything to do with high quality and , in particular, it's Meguiar's Gold Class Rich leather Conditioner Cleaner wipes that are screwed beyond any dispute.
So, again, you are misrepresenting facts here and allege something that simply isn't true. I am not in a Crusade to bash Meguiar's per se, but I am giving very detailed account of my experience with the specific product which they happen to manufacture.

Finally, as I suggested earlier to others, don't take my word for it. Just read my signature line, do your own search on Google and see for yourself what dozens of others have to say about this hideous product that, alas, came from Meguiar's. The fact that it is Meguiar's is what actually frustrated me, because if it was Armorall or some other known to be "super-shiny" effect producing brand I would know what it is and make my buying decision accordingly. But this frustration , if anything, only tells how highly did I esteem this car care product manufacturing company before (My bad! Will do my due diligence search online next time before trying any new product from them).

Best regards,

Carenthusiast

To those who don't like what I post about Megs hideous cleaner conditioner wipes: we can go about this indefinitely, but what's the point?

Do you realize that I have experienced less than pleasant feelings with the product which, at some point, made me think that my seats are ruined? Imagine yourself in my (or any other consumers') place, with brand new car looking like a cheap 80-s garbage after a slight touch of the product. How would it make you feel?

If you are not biased and don't have any material interest in advocating for Megs products at any cost, then why would you be willing to point a finger at me and turn this discussion into personal debate and look for any excuse to blame me for what the product did to a leather?

This product is obviously not made to touch a brand new leather. And this is not just my opnion: just go on Google and type "Meguiar's Gold Class Rich leather cleaner conditioner ruined" (without quotation marks) and browse the links. See what dozens of customers complain about when reviewing this product (those reviews describe the issues similar to what I describe here form my personal experience).

Meguiar's is known as manufacturer of a decent care products, but with these wipes they screwed a big time.

What I post here can not reflect 1/100th of the frustration that I , and many others, felt using this product on their brand new leather seats. Do you think we all deserved to be shocked by the results and spend an hour (others spent more) trying to get this slimy product off our seats? And why so?

Reading some of the replies I just find it hard to believe that some posters not biased and are not in one way or another benefiting from the Megs.

Even if you work for Megs or in any way associated with Megs products, the best you can do is not to attack and demonize the consumer who has the legitimate basis to be dissatisfied with the product, but you should instead worry about reputation of your company and ask yourselves what could be done to prevent such mishaps in future.
May be Meguiar's should add a line on a product description, such as "GREAT FOR OLDER, CRACKED UP LEATHER!" or "BEST RESULTS ON VINYL SEATS!", or "SUPER-SHINE YOUR OLD AND DULL LEATHER NOW!".
These wipes are OBVIOUSLY NOT MADE to clean and condition a brand new leather, they have horrific , Armorall-shoe-shine inducing effect that makes your brand new leather look terrible! Why not give the buyer some hint of what these wipes will do to a leather?

Interesting how as soon as a Meg's representative made a post his problem resolved itself. His trend of posts doesn't appear to be forthright IMO. Whatever makes you happy OP. Just lets us know to ignore the boy crying wolf.

OH MY GOSH, Is this thread still alive? Lets close this thing....

What megs rep posted had nothing to do with solving my problem.

I came here after rubbing my seats with Lexol for over an hour and after reading consumer reviews of Meguiar's Gold Class rich leather cleaner conditioner wipes online ( you can do the same if you type and search in Google "Meguiar's Gold Class rich leather cleaner conditioner ruined" without quotation marks. Just read what dozens of other shocked customers wrote about their experience with this product).

The next morning I saw the effects of rubbing the seat with Lexol (apparently Lexol was good enough in reducing that Armorall-shoshine-supershine-glaze effect that I had from Megs wipes).

Even Lexol didn't provide full solution ( up to now I have some shoe-shine residue between center console and rear/right seats in the back, as well as around headrests), but overall it is not as bad as it was before cleaning the grease off with the Lexol.

What Megs representative posted here had nothing to do with me using Lexol to get rid of this hideous product.

You really should read the forum rules. Especially number 4.

For your information I do not post in any topic without reading EVERY post.

I do not now or have I ever worked for Meguiar's. The simple fact is you bought a product designed to do something other than what you thought it should do. That is not the products fault or the manufacturers fault.

The product is labeled as leather cleaner and conditioner. It neither cleaned nor conditioned my seats. But it left greasy residue and gave my brand new seats a shine that would be expected of Armorall, but not of Meguiar's.

Over 50% of the buyer reviews of the product on Amazaon are ONE STAR ( do your own search as I suggested earlier) and many threads exist where various consumers complain of the similar issues with this product.

Megs should put some kind of a warning sign that this product is designed to give an artificial shine and is greasy to touch, so the consumers would be aware of what they are buying into.

I wanted a cleaner and conditioner (mainly to protect my new seats from future damage, sort of like an extra layer of coating). What I received instead was a coat of greasy residue and extremely strong, unnatural, Armorall kind of shine all over my seats.

If this product is designed to give such unnatural shine to leather (which n fact ruins the looks of a brand new leather!), then there must be some hint, some indication of the same. May be add to description "GREAT TO GIVE NEW LIFE TO DRIED LEATHER" or "GREAT ON VINYL" or "BRING BACK TO LIFE YOUR OLD SEATS". At very least say it gives a SUPERSHINE.

I am sure there are people who would love it and would pay to get another Armorall type of the shiner (either for the dashboard or for the seats) and there would be no disappointments or frustrations over it HAD Megs truthfully described the product for what it is.

P.S. NOTE that after cleaning my seats with Lexol and seeing some positive results next morning I thanked posters of this forum (several pages ago) and was about to leave this thread for good. But some posters keep returning and each time they post they attack me personally and try to find any excuse to make me the prime subject of this thread. When that happens I respond, consistently reminding them that I am not the subject of this thread and that I had legitimate reasons to express my frustration with the effects of the product on my leather seats.

Most people do a test spot before applying a product they are not familiar with all over their brand new car. Common sense IMO, also you say that Meguiars makes "decent" products? I'm sorry, they make damn good products IMO. In the future, make sure a product actually damaged your vehicle before slandering it all over the web. Just some advice.

Two instructions on the can states: 'Do a test spot' and 'to wipe off the affected area with a cotton towel if it too shiney'.

You even said that NOT wiping afterwards was your mistake.

I don't want to bust your chops, but you, not Meguiar's are the culprit.

P.S. Slander, Sir, is an action of crime whereby someone makes false spoken statement damaging person's reputation.

I challenge entire team of Meguair's lawyers and legal advisers to find a single FALSE assertion in my posts regarding their product.
Internet is open, it's fairly easy to get my IP and with it my whereabouts.
If you are Meg's PR employee I challenge you to stand by your accusation that my claims are FALSE. In fact, I will turn tables and charge you with slander if you falsely accuse me of slandering, whereby I expressed my opinion of the product in good faith and truthfully.
Just because you work for Megs doesn't mean you can threaten and intimidate people into silence.
Perhaps you really need some big, class action lawsuit to learn some good lessons.
Be respectful of honest opinion of consumers who had serious issues with this product.

I'm not taking sides...just enjoying the show....

Not taking sides, but. There is a ton of reviews saying how poor this product is...just sayin :)

How are your seats now? Hopefully you got it worked out man! It's probably a good time to just move on at this point.....

Happy Thanksgiving! Put this behind you and have and gave a great day!

Nobody is suggesting the product didn't give an undesirable (to him) appearance on his seats.

What we do find astounding is his initial and ongoing reaction to the issue. Claiming the product "ruined" and "destroyed" his seats (both in the title and continuously throughout the thread) is an over-reaction. Writing huge, long-winded repetitive posts claiming the "destruction" of his seats, even after he himself stated the shine went away the next day, yet he continues to come back and repeat himself, claiming we are attacking him, or that we are Meguiars employees (that makes me laugh!) contributing to this thread being 12 pages of pointless (albeit somewhat entertaining) rubbish.

So the product left an undesirable appearance on your seats, which went away the next day. MOVE ON man! Life is too short to put so much time and energy into vigorously defending your position over an issue which is quite trivial in the scheme of things.

They are better now. Took me an hour of hard work with Lexol to reduce that hideous shine on my seats. I still have residues around headsets and around center console.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
