Hey guys. Got a Sonata 2.0T here with some strange caked on gunk on one of the wheels. It almost appears to be a stain. You can't feel it. I've tried normal and heavy duty wheel cleaners and even clay. Any ideas what I could be looking at? Thanks!

Well if you did all that and its still there then its certainly into the clear coat of the wheel.

Have your tried any polish or compound?

I have not yet. If it is into the clear coat, then I am a little baffled. It's a 2011 with 45k miles. I've seen 10 and 12 year old DDs that didn't have this. Kinda makes me wonder what in the world could have caused it...

:iagree: It looks like it could be staining from an acidic wheel cleaner. just a thought

That would be brake cleaner over flow from a tech cleaning off sticky wheel weight residue when he re-balanced your wheels. Notice the wheel weights in your picture right behind your problem area ;)

Hmm. Good spot Brody. Gosh this things gonna be a pain to get off. Possible stupid question, but can I use the same compound like I would use on paint followed by a metal polish?

I see it all the time. I've been into cars since I was a little kid. I worked as a tech at an Acura dealership for a few years and now I co-own a rim and wheel repair company. Most all painted wheels use the same base coat clear coat system that is used on your vehicles body. Ergo, you can use the same compounds and polishes with out issue.
