The masses have their hands out - and they want you to work while they play X Box and eat Papa Johns all day. That's the real problem, the forced redistribution of our income. Not those that have money and didn't work for it.
So Swanic, all those people that relied on government assistance when they lost their homes, possessions and places of employment during the Sandy storm that hit the east coast last year, they bother you? Decent self respecting americans were forced to take food stamps, and rely on government welfare programs to get by. They bother you? Ex military people who rely of government programs, they bother you, too?
It is very easy to judge from the comfort of your sofa when you are not affected...
That number is mis-used.
Many of that 49% are retirees and military people.
Half of that number receives MedicAid
one seventh of that receives food stamps
less that a tenth of that receives housing assistance
Which of that 49% are we hating on?
I understand the point. It's not lost on me. It is simply poorly framed.
If one is struggling to make ends meet and takes advantage of available government programs to pull oneself up and try and improve the family's life, then we should applaud them and help them up. It is hard enough for a proud American to ask for welfare... let's not judge them.
However, if a slumlord or drug dealer drives up in a swanky Bentley and drops a grand to get it spit shined... you see where I am heading with this?
I'm simply trying to point out that there is a lot more to it than simple numbers.
There are many that will take advantage of any government program. Many are deserving Americans including your grandparents and even some of your parents.
An attorney friend of mine got laid off almost four years ago and, as time went on, had three homes foreclosed upon. My friend has liquidated all assets, gone through all retirement savings and investments and is living with parents to make ends meet. Taking unemployment benefits was the lowest point, but what can you do in these tough times?
MY friend is in that 49%.

This thread got off topic quick.
^^^How True!^^^
Just an observation:
Some of the most recent posts, that do so, are reminiscent of the maxim:
"Morality binds...and blinds".
Speaking of moral questions:^^ Bob, will you be picking up any Gold Wax to replace your M26?
