How To Detail Museum Cars, Classics & Antiques

This Saturday we're holding a very unique detailing class to offer training to staff and volunteers of the Elliot Museum on proper techniques for detailing museum cars.

There will be a lot of emphasis on correct techniques for hand polishing and waxing as often times antique and classic cars have either single stage lacquer or enamel paint.

Single stage paints tend to be a lot softer than modern clear coats paints and antique single stage paints also tend to become dry and brittle over long periods of time.

We well be going over machine polishing using tools like the Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher as well as the Griot's Garage 3" Mini Polisher.

Our training car is an antique, Model A Police Car and I've taken some high resolution pictures to document the current condition.

My co-worker Jeff who is a "Car Guy" and a fan of both classics and muscle cars had me take his picture in this old Police Car...

I can tell you the secret to maintaining Museum cars iN 1 word

GLAZE !!! ;)

I met John Giltinan from the Museum at a recent parade.Nice guy.

Shouldn't Jeff be in the back seat?

<----- First in with an insinuating comment.

Ring and bracelet against the paint!!

Good eye Joe... but he's not working on it... just getting picture...

What's more important is I had my ring and watch off today.

But good point for others to take note of and that's when you're working on your own car or anyone else's car, remove your jewelry and your watch.

Class is over, 1930 Model A Police Car just left, pictures on Monday...
