So one of my really good buddies stopped by my office yesterday asking if we could house sit for him and his wife while they were away for Thanksgiving.
Since my wife and I will be in town, and have 4 days off, it's no big deal to us, we're happy to do it (him and his wife are great friends of ours).
My buddy hands me an envelope (I figured it was instructions, like... feed the dog, clean cat box, blah blah blah...) NOPE! My buddy gave my wife and I two awesome tickets to go see Trans-Siberian Orchestra in Sacramento as a Thank you for house sitting! (not cheap tickets either...)

My buddy is a hard worker, unfortunately his 2004 G35 is a bit neglected.
It was in pretty decent shape until they bought their home and it was left in the driveway... If you know anything about Northern California, know that we are legendary for the hardest water possible.. Water spots abound on his finish, I put a couple layers of butter wet wax to minimize the appearance, but it would be awesome to see them gone and his car back in pristine condition.

As a thank you to my buddy, I want to surprise him by doing a full correction on his car, however I'm a bit confused. I see some people are saying the G35 has incredibly soft clear, and others are saying it's hard...

Any advice on the best course of action for getting his car back into shape?
I've got the full line of V polishes from CG, as well as megs M105 & M205...
CG hex-logic pads, etc...

Additionally... The water spots won't happen again, they now keep the G35 in the garage to prevent any further damage.

Chico, Ca. (about 90 minutes north of Sacramento on hwy 99)

I'm in the Beale AFB area, near Marysville, Yuba City.

Awesome!
Normally when people say their Nor-Cal I expect bay area, etc... Nice to see another true Nor-Cal person on here.

The hardness of the clear is dependent on the model year. The earlier models 03-04's (for sure) are pretty soft. Nissan started using the harder clear coat on later models. If you look under the hood the models with the harder clear coats have a sticker that states this. The 04 model won't have it though. This is my '04.

Have you seen TSO in person yet? The concert is awesome! If you like their music, lasers and fire you'll love it. :xyxthumbs: My wife and I have been 3 different years when they were here in New Orleans and we loved it.

Let us know how everything turns out for ya! Have fun.

Infiniti paint is super soft. My 08 G 37 coupe had very soft paint. The best combo I found was menzerna fg400 to cut, followed by menzerna super intensive si1500 and then menzerna sf4500. My car was black, so the final step really helped with the gloss.

That is the exact same car as his minus the wheels. And he had the roof painted black to imitate one of the Japanese models with a glass roof. Yours is absolutely beautiful!!! I'm really hoping I can bring his back to life!
His is a 2004, so I'll be sure to use extra caution when getting the spots off and buffing it out.

This will be the first time my wife and I will see TSO, been dying to for years, unfortunately it just never worked out financially for us. We both absolutely love Christmas time, and TSO is hands down one of our favorite bands. Can't wait to see them with lasers and fire!!! :D

Thanks for the heads up!
I'll have to see if I can get these delivered before Thanksgiving without breaking the bank.
I really appreciate the help!
What pads did you wind up using with the product?
Did a DA or a rotary work better for you?

Sorry for 20 questions, this one is special to me, really want to get it back to looking amazing!

Hey man the more questions the better! I used buff and shine pads with the polishes and compound. To start you should get white for polishing, orange for cutting, and I believe blue is for light polishing but don't quote me on that. There should be a chart out on the Internet somewhere.

I neglected to mention that I used the flex 3401 vrg. I love that machine. The porter cable will do just fine though. I don't touch my paint with a rotary.

I've got the full line up of CG hex-logic pads, they've always worked well for me, so I figured why switch.
I was looking at the Menzerna, would be tough to swing that and add 2nd day shipping (I'm in California, so AG is completely across the country and shipping is a bit slow, especially with the holidays coming up... UPS is only delivering Ground packages Mon, Tue, Wed next week).

I figured I would just use what I've already got in stock.
M105/M205 as well as V32/V34/V36/V38
I was going to start with some V34 on an orange pad and see how that handled the water spots.
Bump up to V36 on a green pad, then finish with V38 on blue pad.
If I can get the paint looking good, I'll seal it with Jetseal 109, Top with Pete's 53, and V7. (This combo seems to work great for some reason)

I really appreciate the help, My buddy has been a life saver to me.
Really want to make his jaw drop when he walks into his garage and see's his car "shinin' like a diamond" lol.

I think the 105/205 combo will work fine for you. If it's the same color it is extremely forgiving unlike the darker colors. But since the top is a respray who knows how it will react?
Thanks for the compliment on the ride. I love seeing people's reaction when I tell them it's 10 years old :dblthumb2:

You will love the concert!

Was going to go as easy as possible on the top, my buddy is under the impression it's a single stage paint that was used. My plan was a green CG hex-logic polishing pad and some V38 optical polish for starters. Thankfully the top didn't get the waterspots too bad. The drivers side is absolutely covered :-(

Really looking forward to the concert, it's going to be a blast!

Keep in mind that paint hardness is very color and year specific. That's why you may read someone saying the paint is soft and someone else claiming Infiniti paint is hard.

Never know until you try. Your test spot process should be similar in all situations.

Look at the severety of the defects, if it's obvious that a finishing polish won't get you the results, grab the least aggressive compound you have (like D300) and try that on a cutting pad or light cutting pad and play around with different pressures and speeds. If that's not enough, step to a more aggressive compound. Once you start doing this, it will become evident what combo works best.

Ahhh yes Chico! All my dads side of the family is from there and my little sister is graduating Chico State in May. Beautiful there, I grew up in southern cali (Barstow) and loved to go visit my grandma in Chico.

Chico is a neat little town that seems to keep growing and growing. I never thought i would look at a housing development and say "I remember riding my bike through that when it was just a field".
Definitely a nice place to live! Small town feel, most of the big town features, and Sacramento is only 90 mins away.
Congratulations to your sister graduating in May!!!
