New guy realizing small mistakes

Oddly enough, I was thinking about this last night at work. Cars today are amazing, the paint, technology, and so on... I am amazed that so many people are so willing to in-detail explain their techniques and share their craft with those that are willing to listen or are as enthusiastic as they are.

We are all fortunate, experienced and non, to have others with more experience than ourselves share their stories. For that, I am thankful. I appreciate all of you guys for what you do here on a daily basis. My car has never looked better, and this is after TNOG / Saturday 101 at Meguiars in Irvine where Michael Stoops called me "picky" about my car, which gave me a chuckle. Coming from him, I wasn't sure how to feel.. hahaha

I used to use the window washer blades at the gas station to clean my cars. I THOUGHT I was so slick too. THE joke Is on Me!

if I dropped wash mitts on the floor I would dip them back in the bucket only if it was close to me. HAAAA

The most I knew before autogeek was to never drop the mitt and to rinse with a flooding smooth flow instead of sticking my thumb in the hose.

True! I'm ruined. I can't even drive down the road without evaluating EVERY car I see. How can those people be happy with all those swirls?!? And the car shows on TV aren't much better. Don't they realize??? Wow. I've turned in to a real snob!

I have a bad habit in telling people how to manage their on cars. Lol

Just walk up to strangers and start telling them how much deeper and clearer their color would look were it not for the swirls. Swirls? What's a swirls? :dunno:
Then pontificate about how the number one cause of clear coat failure is NOT keeping the paint clean, protected and sealed.

Learning how to properly detail was the biggest mistake I ever made. I used to love going to local car shows and looking at all of the nice old muscle cars and hot rods people bring out...even the Friday night grocery store parking lot gathering was a weekly treat. Now I walk around and look at all of the bad paint. WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?!?!?!

For REAL... Now we don't have that many 'drive in/cruise in' type shows/hang outs around here, but Summit Racing is just down the street (1 of only 3 in the country) and they have "Monday Night Cruise In" during the summer and early Fall months. I started going over there and just walk around not able to enjoy the cars for all the freaking swirls! I'll literally find the 2 or if there is another one (3) best cars there and walk up to them telling them that they are the only ones there with paint that DESERVES to be on the lot. :laughing:

Thursday Night Open Garage, you get to go hang out at Megs garage and play with the products. Its like a sandbox for people who like playing with car paint. Freakin fantastic place to be on a thursday night.

Here's a history lesson on the TNOG's

They actually started out taking place on Wednesday nights and then I switched them to Thursday nights. I think the first year for the Wednesday Night Open Garage was 2007 but it might have been 2006. A little searching of the forum group for "Pictures & Comments" would yield the answer.


After I left Meguiar's and came to Autogeek I duplicated the TNOG's I started out there here.

Mike Stoops started out coming to the TNOG's as a car enthusiasts and then went to work for Meguiar's in Customer Care. When I left I recommended him to management as my replacement and he took over my position and continues to run both the TNOG'S and Saturday classes to this day and he does a great job because he has a passion for the art of polishing paint and he's a true "car guy".
