The Incoming Polar Vortex

So for all us Northerners and Great Plains residents, what are your opinions of this dreaded Polar Vortex that the news is going nuts over? As a Michigan resident, when they say the Great Lakes are going to freeze over it piques my interest!

To quote from FoxNews "As much of the country digs out from a powerful winter storm that buried parts of the Northeast, tundra-like temperatures are poised to deliver a rare and potentially dangerous blow to the Midwest, with forecasters predicting a near-record or historic cold outbreak.
The "polar vortex," as one meteorologist calls it, is expected to send cold air piled up at the North Pole down to the U.S., funneling it as far south as the Gulf Coast and driving temperatures below freezing for most of the nation.
Forecasters expect a weekend warm-up in some areas before temperatures plunge again, sending wind chill temperatures in areas in North Dakota and Minnesota to minus 50 degrees by Saturday night.
Those states are notorious for their cold winters, but states in the Mid-Atlantic and New England can also expect wind chill temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees."

Better or worse than the drought that California is experiencing right now?We have been in the mid 60s to low 70s which sounds nice but without rain or snow for the Sierra Nevadas it makes our smog levels rise to record highs and rivers at record lows which hurts the farmers big time.

I find it funny they closed schools 3 days early because it is going to be cold. A few weeks ago we had -30 temps for lows and -20 for highs non wind chills. Not only did our kids still have school, they still went out for recess.

In SC it's dropping to 35* during the day and 18* at night (and I work nights ) this Tuesday. Born and raised in South Fl. I have never experienced the type of cold coming our way. Not looking forward to this at all.

I drive a sports car with little more than 4 inches of ground clearance through the snow with no problem, yet down south they get one to two inches and the world ends! It's funny how different people are depending on where they live.

We (down south people) don't have the snow removal equipment (down here) that you Yankees up there have.....

I'm only 44 years old but I can remember when I was first hired at my current job that overnight temps were -6 degrees with a wind chill even lower. It is winter and every once in awhile it's gonna get downright cold. Yet towards the end of this upcoming week it will be in the high 30's.
A few more years and we are heading south. Even there it's gonna be cold.
Did a certain 24 hour cable weather station name this triple scoop cold weather situation?

I think its embarrassing that schools are already closed here in Chicagoland over this, really, bundle up and you'll be fine. About a week and half ago my car showed -2 actual when I got off of work @9:30 p.m. one night and yeah it took about 4 seconds to start my car and it didn't sound good doing it, it did. Now its going to be worse this Monday but I filled up my car already and tomorrow I'm going to head down to the underground parking spot and check my tires and make sure I've got them aired up about 5 psi over normal, just something I do when it gets cold as you lose about 1 psi for every 10 degree temp drop. I will also check my oil, top off the washer fluid for the hell of it (not like you can use it when its that cold) oh and most importantly I washed my car tonight as I'm not going anywhere for the rest of tonight, or tomorrow and don't start work till 12:30 p.m. on Monday, so I'll be pulling out of the garage w/ temps in there around 40 and then the car will be slapped in the face with that brisk cold air.....BRING IT:bat:

I don't think he was making fun of you. But I did spend some time in SC and one winter it snowed like 2 inches and the whole city shutdown. People were crashing their cars left and right.

And so it begins about 2" so far of the projected 8"-10"!


It was definitely an interesting drive home from work tonight but alas I made it home safely.

And no, I most certainly would never make fun of a southerner for the lack of snow removal for one main reason, in 10 years my car will have significant rust thanks to all the road salt, while in 20 years and some decent care his car will look just like the day he bought it! I do apologize if it came across as rude.

Recess?!?! Holy CRAP! Just don't let those kids stick their tongue's to the ol' flag pole!

Even down here we're expecting single digits, teens and below freezing temps from now till Thursday. And believe you me, it doesn't get into teens very often down this way, and single digits just don't happen.

I am not sure where the south starts officially but here in Missouri a few inches of snow snarls things up. You should see what happens when we get ice. Really a good rain snarls things up. We just don't get enough practice driving on snow and ice (thank god). Sometimes I think the state has one snow plow and just shares it between counties. Snow really screws up the dirt roads also. You can't really plow them. On the flip side we have lots of tornados we handle those pretty well. Try to stay warm.
