The Incoming Polar Vortex

I am not sure where the south starts officially but here in Missouri a few inches of snow snarls things up. You should see what happens when we get ice. Really a good rain snarls things up. We just don't get enough practice driving on snow and ice (thank god). Sometimes I think the state has one snow plow and just shares it between counties. Snow really screws up the dirt roads also. You can't really plow them. On the flip side we have lots of tornados we handle those pretty well. Try to stay warm.

I am already getting cabin fever. Im the MAN

This is exactly what I am talking about! We get like one tornado every few years and maybe one neighborhood gets hit. If a legit tornado came through here we would lose our minds! Same with the heat, over 80 I'm too warm while down south 80 is nice and balmy!!

Not looking forward to it I've been here for 2 years and never seen this kinda of cold. I'm from Oklahoma lived in Austin for 4 years so this stuff is nuts to me the snow I can deal with it got me a all drive car but the cold wow its nasty.

Very rarely is it balmy. It is humid here (not as bad a some other places but its pretty bad). There is never a need to get to upset about the weather here because it can change in about 15 minutes.

Yea it cuts ya to the bone. The key is layers. I looks like I'm just wearing a hoodie but underneath is 3 more layers of shirts. Way more effective than a $200 ski jacket. (For the most part. Once the negatives hit then the Carhartts come out!)

I don't think he was making fun of you. But I did spend some time in SC and one winter it snowed like 2 inches and the whole city shutdown. People were crashing their cars left and right.
There is a certain knack for driving in the snow and when you rarely and I mean VERY rarely, it's virtually impossible for some peeps to have enough common sense to how drive out of a slide. Additionally we don't have the snow plows and/or trucks (slight numbers if any) and definitely don't have snow tires. The best most of us Southerners will have is an all season M&S which isn't very good in either mud or so but they pass the "federal" requirements........ I'm not saying there isn't some sort of a connection, but sure as hell ain't saying there isn't a connection either!!
What Yankees think of Southerners is as big a concern to me and my peeps as the price of tea in China. (think irrelevance).
I lived two winters in Topeka, KS but worked an hour south of there in a hole in the road whose name I have forgotten (Maybe Wolfcreek?). Would head out at 5am behind a snow blowing apparatus for nearly 60 miles. Could never see the road, but, we kept a sharp lookout for those tail lights..... we were definitely following too close, but, if we were to be at work by 7:00am, that's the price we paid, plus we had studded snow tires being lead by the snow plow blowing snow off the road at around 50-60mph...... woohoo........ what a ride! I would NEVER do it again.

80* IS nice and balmy :) :dblthumb2:

Shagnat that sounds like one heck of a ride. Must've been nice having studded tires which are illegal here as well as chains on the tires. Which they claim ruins the roads yet the scraping they've done to it so far has removed all patching they did over summer and the roads are pothole city!!
Another thing is that thanks to budget cut backs (at least in metro Detroit) we probably have the same amount of snow plows as you guys! And a set of basic snow tires will set you back $1500+ so must of us suck it up with All Seasons or Summer tires.
The biggest issue with winter driving is SUVs. They can get going no problem with the 4 wheel drive but they weigh so much it is hard for them to stop quickly when there is no traction.

Well, if you are a solar cycle, sun flare believer 2013 was suppose to be the peak of the 11 yr cycle. So maybe 2014 is the start of cooler temps.

All I know is my car is trashed, covered with salt. I am just waiting for temps to hit mid-30's today in Philly so I can wash it while it just drizzles.

Howard

This weather is just what I've been waiting for to get even with my neighbor for all his tricks. I'm going to put a sprinkler on his car tonight and leave it running all night.

Just like when the introduction of "new-age" detailing terms is
said to be needed to replace the "old school" detailing lingo...

I suppose it's also being deemed necessary for this "changing-of-the-guard"
to be applicable to climatic events.

No longer will just saying:
'an Artic blast of cold air' be sufficient for the Northern Hemisphere meterologists.

Next thing you know:
Some will say that "The Greenhouse Effect" and "Global warming"...ARE NOT the same thing!!
(They aren't, are they?)

Bob

Kinda jealous of this. A storm like this would kill all of my palms and agaves which would be an expensive storm.

Not gonna lie, it's absolutely beautiful. Especially this afternoon when it was in the upper 20s which isnt all that cold. Tonight is when the temp is going to drop and then that is no fun at all.

Wouldn't the greenhouse effect just be a component of climate change / global warming? At least, in my understanding of it.

The HIGH for tomorrow is below zero. That's nearly unheard of here in the middle-part of the midwest. Hasn't been this cold in 25 years I'm told. Other parts of the world routinely get this, but 15" of snow, below zero temps, and 30mph winds driving the windchill down to -30 or -40 tomorrow is not something we're used to or prepared for. The wife and I will both be working from home tomorrow.

We (down south people) don't have the snow removal equipment (down here) that you Yankees up there have.....

Which proves a point...... if you haven't been there and experienced it, don't make judgments with your narrow little mind.

Yeah, and it was 81 today in Tampa :dblthumb2:

You know, a pet peeve of mine is when people here where I live complain that people "don't know how to drive in snow".

Here's the deal. We don't get snow every year, and we only now and then get a bad snow or ice storm. Usually the roads are clear. Unlike folks north of us, we don't deal with it as a common thing that everyone is just prepared for. And unlike those south of us, we do now and then have to deal with snow and ice on the ground.

So, there are those who have driven in the snow several times in the course of many years, and there are those who perhaps rarely get out in it and seriously have only driven once or twice in it.

BUT, the real people who don't know how to drive in snow? Are the people saying that. Because their complaint is that people are driving slowly, staying far back, etc. Getting in their way! Their definition of 'knowing how to drive in snow' is being able to drive as if there was no snow. THAT is stupid, and not indicative of any sort of skill. Usually, they'll pass you blaring their horns, and later, you'll see them huddled in a tow truck with the driver hooks their car up to get them out of the ditch (or worse). I've had that exact scenario happen to me more than once! (Been passed, flipped off, horn honked, etc., and mere minutes later saw the same vehicle in a ditch)

Just slow down and be cautious!

We are in a 'weird' realm as far as snow though. The state has snow removal equipment (plows, etc.) and there are a handful of companies to take care of parking lots and such. But, MOST of us just have a shovel to remove the snow (not that some haven't invested in snow blowers and what not).

It is always amazing to me how people from different regions of the country have a superiority complex about one another. But it's especially entertaining when it comes to one region or another experiencing something that is unusual to their region but common in another region. In this case, heavy snow, cold, etc. farther south. Folks up north snicker as if they are experts and these dumb southern hicks don't know any better. Then, come summer, if there's a heat wave that pushes the northern states up into the 90's, the southern folks will snicker and say "I need a light jacket for temps like that!" and chuckle at the dump yankees up north. And the cycle continues. Such is life I guess. When you can't become a better person on your own, just attribute arbitrary and meaningless things like where you live to your ego! (that's not directed at anyone in this thread necessarily. But I do see a lot of it when these storms hit. Some of my own friends are posting on facebook videos and pictures of accidents down south, chuckling because they aren't comfortable with or familiar with stuff we have experience with; even if it's limited since we're 'in the middle')
