Taping stripes.

Are they oem? If so I believe they are usually clear coated in... dont take my word for it though.

Good one... If they are clear coated then you can just look at it and tell. If they are CC then you won't have to necessarily tape them.
 
+1 for placing a piece of tape over the stripes, and IMO you should always place tape on stripes or any decals whether clear coated or not to avoid any problems, and for a easier clean up at the end
 
Thanks I will no doubt tape them, what I meant (my bad) is there any thin tape out there thinner then .94" to avoid taping the top edge and polishing and then taping the bottom edge?
 
Use 1/8" fine line blue tape, they go up to 1/2". Measure you're width, then head up to an automotive paint supply store. Cost should be around or under $10 a roll.

We applied 3M Blue Vinyl Tape over the fagile hand painted pinstripes on a 1959 Impala we did an extreme makoeve on just a few weeks ago....

Sorry, I didn't get any pictures of the actual tape on the pinstriping.

You can also use painter's tape but it's a good idea to burn the tape before usign it.


There's another technique most of you know about but might not know the name for it... it's called,

Burning the tape

To be extra careful, I'm going to place the adhesive tape against my shirt a few times to attract some fuzz and fiber off the shirt and onto the adhesive thereby reducing it's stickiness and thus it's adhesive strength. This is called,

Burning the tape

For any place where paint is seen to be flaking or chipping off, I want to take some extra precautions.

This is when you apply the tape to your shirt or pant leg first to reduce the stickiness and then apply the tape to the paint. Kind of like how like a fresh lint roller sheet is super sticky, but as you roll it over cloths to remove lint the stickiness falls off.

Anyway, I have a picture of this somewhere on the forum but the name of the technique is called,
