To testify to the durability of an STI motor, I drove mine about 800 miles with only about 2 quarts of oil in it. Seized the motor and warranty covered it. When any motor is Turbo charged you can trash it in less than 100k miles if you don't keep an eye on the oil more often than I did, apparently. I would take a Subaru over any other Japanese manufacturer. There is nothing like AWD burnouts on asphalt, or in a field.

Funny comments of don't get a wrx because there are too many on the road, and don't by a Subaru because their motors are garbage. Isn't it ironic?... I see way more Mazdas blowing smoke out the tailpipe than Subarus. For OP's budget he will be hard pressed to find any of the optional cars without some issues. That why I say price parts and the cost for a motor swap in any car you consider. You know if your considering a Z or Mazda then why not meet in the middle and get a Miata? Cheap, fun, and plenty of parts for them.
