What size extension cord should I get for my 7424 xp so I wont burn it up, I'm looking for 25 ft length...... I know it comes with chart in the instructions but having a hard time understanding it.

I'd get a 12 gauge, that will be more than large enough to carry the current. The added cost is worth it.

Yes but a 12 AWG cord will also carry the current for any electrical equipment you can attach normal 15A/20A circuit so it is an investment.

I built a 14ga cord for mine myself. It's 25 or 30'. Works perfectly with no issue. 12ga is overkill. Not many people use a 12ga cord. Only usually contractors running 100' and running multiple tools. A 14ga would be plenty for about everything you'll ever want to do. A lot easier on the pocket book too.

My 12 gauge does have a built in 3 prong female side, so I can run my halogens and polisher off the same cord at once.

That would be the only reason to have a 12ga cord. If you had one with a tri-tap end on it to run multiple things (DA, vacuum, lights, etc). But for a cord for just one thing at a time I wouldn't bother with the extra cost of a 12ga.

IMHO:
Any extension cord, regardless of gauge or number of female-taps, is only as good as the circuit it's plugged into.

That's also a great point Bob.

Very good point. And beings that the PC 7424 only pulls 4.5 amps. A 20 amp rated cord is overkill anyway. But I agree if you only have 15A circuits in the garage then there would be no point to get a bigger cord because it won't benefit you.

Looks like Ill go for a 14 g then on the 25 ft cord thanks everyone for the help !

I have one of those xx Gallon (way too big) sterelite tubs full of old extension cords that I've collected from when idiots were moving out of one apartment and into the next in college. Dump all kinds of crap because they didn't want to move it.

Anyway, of all the yellow contractor ones (i bought) orange, green, red/black, etc... This is quite honestly one of the best ones I've purchased. It is very flexible and can be had for $12 with their 25 off coupon. I have bought several of them in the past 6 months and that tub full of extension cords is still sitting where it was the day I bought the first one.

As mentioned above, it's more about running multiple items from a single cord that makes "overkill" worth it. As expensive as detailing power-tools are, it is just silly to "cheap" out on an extension cord. I say cheap, because this one from HF is "cheap" but Great quality. Grab a few. You won't look back.

Ironically it's cheaper to get 2 of these than one 50' from the same store.

Another hidden gem at HF....

Here's a few to compare to... you'll pay more for a 14 at the big box stores than the 12 from HF. I can't comment on the 14's at HF though...
