removal of old wax, before new wax - required?

You mentioned XMT 360 and 4500, but my truck has no swirls. Do you think KAIO would work well for stripping old wax off?
Certainly. KAIO is a unique product that works great. Just remember when using an AIO such as XMT 360 or KAIO you'll have them as protection on the surface when you finish. So with XMT 360 you'll clean with a very, very light abrasive property and leave a polymer sealant protection. With KAIO you'll chemically polish your car and leave an acrylic sealant on the surface. If you'd like to wax over them you can to add a layer of another product since it's going on a fresh layer of sealant that should be firmly adhered to the clean paint.

Yes it is necessary IMO to remove the old layer of wax that way the new coat of wax can bond to the paintwork , and not the remains of the wax also dawn may strip your lsp but in the near future consider something like Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Gloss or Chemical Guys Citrus Wash and Clear to do your stripping
Why not use Chemical Guys Clean Slate Surface Cleanser
!??!

When your coat of wax starts to fade and you need to apply a new coat of wax... is it really required to strip it all completely (dawn wash), or can you just go to town with some new wax on the 'ol PC7424 and put on a new coat?

Pro's / Con's ?

It depends how good you want it to look if you want to look best strip it

That will work kind of...

If you really want to ensure you have removed everything off the surface the BEST way is to hand or machine apply a fine cut polish.

This will,

  • Remove any old wax
  • Remove light oxidation
  • Remove light swirls, scratches and water spots
  • Smooth the paint over and amp up the gloss
  • Perfectly prepare the paint for wax or sealant
  • If you want to apply a coating it will be the step before chemically stripping that helps with every aspect of the coating application.

That's off the top of my head...

:)

There really is no soap out there that will remove an existing wax or sealant. Take a quick read through this thread LSP stripping

After using a "stripping" soap or product you'll notice that the beading is gone, but if you give it a quick wipe with an IPA solution the beading will re-appear. The soaps leave behind a surfactant that causes the water to sheet and the IPA removes the surfactant. I've even tried it with Griots Paint Prep with the same results.

As Mike said use a paint cleaner or light polish if you really want to remove the old LSP.
