IIHS Crash Tests for Midsize SUVs

It's scary how bad these performed. The typical vehicles families buy seem to perform the worst.

The only 2014 SUVs that got the highest rating of good are the Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain, Acura MDX, Mercedes M Class, Volvo XC60 & XC90.

While not every SUV has been tested, the list of good performers is surprisingly short.

This new test is really killing a lot of the vehicles out here presently; my wife's car is a Pilot. Hopefully a crash like this never happens.

I'm all for passive safety systems and making vehicles safer, but what scares me is how inattentive many people are when they drive. It's better to actively drive safely and avoid or minimize damage than to rely on the vehicle alone to save your ass. Following too closely, not signalling lane changes and turns, speeding and constantly changing lanes, talking or texting, sitting goofy in the car (gangsta style), etc. etc.

As a driver from Chicago and also living in Southern Illinois, I will agree 10000000% with this. I'm a college student so I get thrown into the "facts" that younger people drive worse. I will say this, I've seen just as many older people as I have seen young people. It's really sad.

Just last week I was driving, watched this girl take her hands, BOTH, off the wheel to txt, I had my hand on the horn when I saw this and when we came up to the long sweeping turn, guess what she did? Yup, thats right, drifted into my lane. Needless to say my horns woke her up. I really need to start recording this stuff haha.

As for thicker A pillars I agree it's an issue, especially when making left turns at intersections with heavy foot traffic. Sometimes a person just cannot be seen, but some manufacturers include the A pillar windows which while tiny, do help.

See those little windows I feel so nothing. It really spend on the person and how they sit in the seat and all. Idk, but my sisters Saturn vue is one of the worst pillars I've ever seen.

It is scary to see such bad results come out, but as stated before the current situation of people not driving safely certainly isn't helping anyone at all. I think the driving tests need to be much harder and a test should be given after a certain number of years to ensure that person is still capable of driving.

Agreed. I'm only 22 and I have been driving since I was about 16/17 and I've already had 3 people hit me, one totaling my car, another me needing a new rear bumper and one where it could have been a lot worse if I hadn't done something. One that totaled the car, the lady, who was like mid 20's had no insurance and was txting and driving. I saw her looking down right before she hit me. I left about 20ft of skid marks. Her, none.
