Iron X questions

Just an assumption. Spraying a chrome plated alloy wheel that's the only thing I would be concerned about. If you know different please share.

I am pretty sure all chrome plated wheels have a base metal that is an alloy of some sort

I was asking because you sounded really certain about using Sonax on every wheel type and I thought you might be able to expand on that

I personally would not use Sonax on a chrome wheel, where the base metal was exposed

I have used Sonax on chrome plated wheels. Works great. Chrome plated alloy wheels are an aluminum alloy. If it's a high quality plater the alloy will be coated with Nickle. Followed by a coating of copper. Or vice versa, can't remember off the top of my head. Most just have a copper plating followed with the chrome plating. A chrome plated steel wheel would be different obviously. The Sonax is safe on chrome plated alloys. That was the first I had heard of not using iron x on chrome. I don't see anything on AG's page about it. I'll have to read the bottle tomorrow. It may be a case of someone using it on a hot chrome wheel and getting discoloration.

My application technique for Iron X is a pump sprayer as previously mentioned. I then take a grout sponge and spritz that with product and even out the coverage before letting it dwell for a bit, never allowing to dry. Then a full and complete rinse off.

When i do wheels i spray it all over the wheel, inner barrels as well. While some inevitably may hit the disc pads and rotors i don't fret it and insure, again, a COMPLETE rinse. Never had any issues.

I suspect that the truth is that it was always safe, but they just were playing safe (which is always sensible!). So I really doubt that there has been a change which actually makes it safe now. When it first appeared, everyone was told that IX swelled the paint which led to the release of iron, it took me a lot of time to get people to stop repeating that bit of fiction!

Sorry it's been a number of years...probably 20... since my education on the plating process of aluminum wheels. I Do remember that a quality plater does use both copper and nickle...or at least used to. The less expensive way is to skip one of these processes. I'll assume it's the copper step that gets skipped. Back then a quality plated wheel would last for years. The lesser quality plating would usually start peeling within 2 years.

A steel chrome plated wheel would be different because the iron x will react with steel. There is usually going to be some exposed steel around the welds from welding the center into the barrel of the wheel. If iron x was to have a negative effect on any type of chrome in my opinion it would be the chrome plated steel...just my opinion on that.
