Anyone have a rough idea how many 6 inch trizact pads it would take to damp sand an avalanche?

Buy a box.....your gonna need them.

I painted my car, and needed to wet sand it completely. It was a 2003 camry. I have about 10 pads left.

I used a 6" da air sander. 3000 grit.

You'll need a box of 50, maybe more. Use a garden hose to keep the surface wet, and the pads will last a lot longer.

From what I have read...3000 grit is designed for Damp sanding, instead of Wet sanding


Lots of great information on the topic from Mike Phillips on the subject. I hope you (OP) have read all of it before diving in on this.

While that's true, when I painted my car I had so much orange peel, it was the only method I found that worked. I was given the wrong reducer, and that caused the paint to flash way too fast.

Keeping a steady supply of water on the surface allowed the pad to "self clean", so they lasted longer than just damn sanding.

I would go for 3000 grit. It may seem like a fine polish, but Trizact pads cut like a mo-fo, epically when constantly wet.

I'd guess 6-7 to be on the safe side. How long a sanding disc lasts kind of depends on the user. If you sand to dry you can clog the face and wear out the pad prematurely. 6-7 would be on the minimal side.


Is this the factory paint?

If so, stick with #3000 and #5000 grit. The #3000 will knock down as much factory peel as you should go after safely. Re-sanding to refine the sanding mark pattern will make compounding faster, easier and a lot more thorough.

Thanks for the input mike, yes its factory. Before I even get this drastic I actually ordered some of the extra cut microfiber pads from meguiars through you last night, ill see if that helps first
