Good client of mine picked this up last winter to haul cars around and he wanted to get it looking right and have some long term protection applied. This was a LOT of surface area to cover and a reminder of why I dislike doing trucks, especially black ones with finicky paint! :/

Before condition

Left over DA sanding marks and pig tails from a hood repaint…typical body shop.

50/50 LED

Brinkmann

All done

Wheels were polished with Opt Primer Polish and then coated with OCP

We’ve had a terrible spring so far and I was really hoping for sun on this one, but it was too cloudy yet again. :(

Trying to pop through the clouds…

Thanks for looking,
Rasky

Excellent work you persevered a baby truck for a great life

Looks awesome! Black is beautiful when done like this:)

Thanks for sharing, looks great. What did you use for the correction

Very well done, this is what I'd call 'properly detailed'. This car must be looking a giant mirror on the streets, congratulations on your work.

Kind Regards.

The truck looks perfect Rasky.:props:

Welcome to my world Chad -- trucks and SUVs! :xyxthumbs:

I have a similar truck lined up soon...2014 3500HD crew cab dually, in BLACK of course. Right after I did correction on the owner's 2011 black dually he traded it in on this '14.

Glad to see you are keeping busy. :dblthumb2:

Incredible work, but I don't envy you. The paint on those big flat panels has to be perfect, because it's like standing right in front of a huge mirror. I always have to take a day off after huge vehicles to recover.

Are those polished aluminum wheels or are they clear coated? How did the primer polish work? I guess at the very least it preps them for OC, but did you notice any increased gloss or removal of haze?

Thanks you

Beautiful work on that black truck Chad!

Thanks buddy!

Thanks! This paint was a real pain to work on and it acted a lot like sticky Subaru paint. After trying several compounds I ended up using the Rupes 21 with M205 and Megs MF Finishing pads for correction (KBM205 method). I would normally follow that with Opt Primer, but that was not wiping off very well either and I ended up using HP Polish to finish it with

love the black car makeovers...it's so awesome when plan comes together...awesome

It definitely feels great when you're all done, but man the first day just sucks! ;)

HA! :)

You'll have to let me know how the paint acts for you as I've talked to several now that had issues with this paint....it's like the paint sucks up the carrier oils and you can't wipe the polish off.

Hope all is well with you. :)

They were clear coated and pretty swirled up. You'd be surprised how much correction you get using Primer on the Rupes LHR75 and a 3" yellow Rupes pad. Usually I just go over wheels quick by hand with Primer and a 3" MF finishing pad....even that cleans the wheels up noticeably more than Sonax FE and IronX will do. :props:

When I first started using the primer, I didn't realize it actually has very light correction ability. I guess I just didn't get the memo lol. I actually used it to clean up some light micro marring in a couple spots on a black infiniti suv, and was surprised that it worked. The nice thing is that you can go straight to the coating. Will give it a try on wheels next time.

It all makes some sense now that I know others have had similar issues with this paint. When I did the 2011 for this customer, I thought it was because the paint was 'fresh' as the truck was brand new and only had 1000 miles on it when I did it. I wrote it off as finicky factory fresh paint that may have needed more cure time or something.:dunno:

When I did the 2011 again last fall before he traded it in, it was much easier to work with than when the truck was brand new.

I'm crossing my fingers that this 2014 goes smoothly.....

These big trucks really make you appreciate the smaller cars!

What did you do with the pig tails? Did you wet sand? I have an older car in that has been re-painted and it has the body shop kisses all over it. Granted, I told the client that the process that we were going to do would not remove those, but I would still like to know what you did?

And by the way, I too get the trucks. Thing is, you may not like them, but if you get them right, there is not better billboard for your work, since the people that pull up beside it can see themselves. "Lemon into Lemonade!"

Yeah, its pretty close to Hyper Polish in terms of cut. It's been my main finishing polish on OCP jobs and I've only needed an intermediate step on a couple cars now....more for my own piece of mind than anything. ;)

I was able to polish out the sanding marks using the Rupes LHR75 equipped with a MF cutting pad and M20. Took a couple passes though.

LOL! I'm not sure I want that billboard! In fact, I told the owner that I think I'm done with large trucks after doing this one (I've known him for a while now). I only do this on weekends and I simply don't have the time required for these massive jobs. I actually had to take part of Monday off from my full time job to finish this beast, and that's not something I normally like doing. Being part time I also have the luxury of being more selective with what I take on. ;)

I see your point. I too am part time and I had to do the same thing on my last vehicle. I have been working on the one I have now, each evening.
