DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!)

I've read two or three threads about work light stands similar to the one you've put together, and you've convinced me that it's worth the investment to get the LED lights.
I've been struggling with the lighting in my garage and have had to redo various things once I see the car in the sunlight. I bought an inexpensive halogen light from Harbor Freight, thinking that would help, but not only is it blinding and hot, it makes the paint look far worse than it actually appears when viewed outside in full sun.
Do you know if the stand that you're using is heavier than the one on Amazon? Just wondering how sturdy it is when raised up.

Nice write up! I made this set up a few weeks ago, but currently only have 1 PAR38 bulb.
Just for everyone: Make sure that the bulb you get is a SINGLE DIODE bulb. I could only find a PAR38 5000k single diode (the one that Zach linked) at Lowes (Utilitech). The ones at Home Depot are multi-diode.

And that is better because you have one big reflection to look in for swirls instead of multiple smaller ones? Or is there another reason?

I don't see anywhere that it tells you if the light is a single diode bulb.
This is excellent! The only problem is it's 110V not 220V so I just need equivalent bulbs.
I am still using halogen and object the heat, it's already very hot in here when I work outside, over 30 degree centigrade about 95F+ in midday, add the halogen heat, I am dehydrate fast.

I was wondering the same thing Al. With the extremely high initial cost and questionable durability I might forgo my build....I'll have to research this a bit...

IME the early failures seem to be about the same for incandescent, CFL, and LED (i.e., part of the "average" life span). Of course it hurts more when it's an LED, but as Angus noted, the prices on LED's are continually falling. Some of the LED's have a warranty, if that makes Bobby feel any better. The Philips bulb I was looking at for this application (5000K PAR38, 1300 lumens, 19.5W) has a 6-year warranty.
