re: help with yellow streaks

Hi,

I drove off with a new Prius last Wednesday and for some reason, the car picked up some dirt and Yellow Stains from the road that I cannot get off.

I tried WD40, Clay and Tar remover without any luck. Clay worked a little but I had to break 10 lbs of sweat to get very little off.

What is this on my car paint???

How to I easily remove these stains?? It's not bumpy, it's smooth, like it's part of the paint.. but I now the yellow streaks are not. HELP. Many thanks in advance.

Have you tried and compound or polish? Nice garage floor by the way

Re: help with yellow streaks

Thanks...

I can try that. I'd rather not use rubbing compound if there is a cleaner that would work.

Has anyone tried using Iron-X??

Re: help with yellow streaks

Are you sure this isn't tire dressing sling?

Did this happen right when you left the dealer?

Re: help with yellow streaks

Yes, right after I left the dealer, actually after the car was detailed and then the salesperson left to fill my gas tank up.

I could very well be tire dressing sling... . If it is, how do you get it off?? Why is it so difficult to remove?

Re: help with yellow streaks

I wouldn't have thought iron-x would touch it tbh, though I could be wrong. You could try IPA panel wipe if the citrus cleaner doesn't work. I'd suggest soaking the corner of a soft cloth and just working a small patch to see if it'll shift it.

Solvent based tire dressing 'sling' can cause irreversible staining all the way to the base coat.

In fact I believe Nissan has banned this at all of their authorized car dealers (at least they sent out memos) and maybe other manufacturers have followed as well.

I'm not saying this is what your issue is, but it's certainly possible. All car dealers by law should have the MSDS of the materials they use on site (at least in Illinois, just ask the EPA :)), so if this is what I mentioned then you need to ask the service director what kind of dressing they use and to see the MSDS, without mentioning your issue first. If this is permanent staining then they are being irresponsible in not knowing how their products work and the damage they can cause...

...as you can see, I hate car dealers and how they operate.

According to the person I'm sitting next to right now: She recommends going to the district manager of Toyota. They are responsible for the product/customer--they don't care about the dealer.

I've seen this too often and I hope this isn't the case.

That's my opinion also. Have seen it before on light colored cars.

I could be wrong, or I could be looking at the picture wrong... But if it was "sling" from dressing - wouldn't it show up heaviest on the rear most portion of the car - behind the back wheel (and possibly on the wheel)? Maybe it's there as well, but the pic looks to me like it's in front of the the back wheel. I also think if it was "sling" the splash/splatter patter would be shooting downward - not upward. Upward to me says you drove through something and it splashed.

Is this yellow stuff also behind the back wheel? Around other wheels? On any of the wheels?

My guess is someone drove the car through some type of something nasty - and it splashed there. I'd try mineral spirits or tar remover first. If no luck there, I'd try a fine polish and work my way up.

Yeah I could be looking at it wrong--not really sure.

...but the part that throws me off is he said that he can't feel it as if it was staining that's part of the paint now.

Re: help with yellow streaks

Thanks for the input folks.

The mark, stain or sling that we are talking about is on lower panels of each wheel. The most is on the driver side front wheel.

I sure hope it's not solvent based tire dressing.

I also tried bug and Tar remover will no luck. I might try polishing next to see if it will remove it.

Thanks again. Will report how it works later on today.

Defects like this are either "on" the surface, that is topical or below the surface, in this case it means whatever it is it has penetrated into the clear layer of paint. Clearcoat paint is pretty hard for chemicals to penetrate into. It does happen buy my guess is some hand or machine polishing or hand or machine compounding will remove the yellow stains.

What do you have for compounds and polishes?

:)

Re: help with yellow streaks

It's definitely something picked up from the road then deposited on the fender, rocker, and door. If you look carefully there's an arc to the sling.

I'd try an all purpose cleaner or mineral spirits on a soft cloth. A non abrasive paint cleaner, similar to Klasse All-In-One, will probably do the trick too!
