Hey guys

I dont know if yall remember me or not. I use to post here a lot. I was starting a detailing business on the side. I got frustrated for two reasons.

1) I had my first customer and he said I did awesome....then never heard from him again.

2) I got frustrated with ONR because I was washing my wifes Honda Fit in the spring and buy the time I finishes pollen was already laying on the car.

I thought about just having a hose for times when the pollen is high or its a muddy vehicle. But I'm not sure. Another person from work is wanting me to do there car but Im so frustrated I havent said yes.

I need a kick in the pants to get going again lol

It is up to you to follow up with a customer not wait for them to call you.
If you figure out how to control Mother Nature you'll be the first.

If those two little things stopped you then you were right to quit. What do you plan to do when a real problem shows up? You don't have what it takes so leave it to someone else. That's just the way I see it.

I don't mean to put you down OP but Texas is right. Your going to have battles no matter what you get in to.

Do you think we all just picked up a PC and did a complete correction without struggles for the first time?

Guess how I felt when I used a brand new Merino Wool wash mitt only to find out 3/4 of the way through the wash that I had super prickly barbs all throughout the mitt that I had just used on my paint? Frustrated, I don't think that was the word. I must've pulled out at least 20 of those things.

Not trying to be a butt here, but you need to thicken your skin.

I have had clients pay me for a detail then not hear from them for 1-2 years later or not at all. Not all clients will lead to repeat or referral business. If you are acting this way over a client that said you did a great job what are you going to do when someone complains if you miss something?

Getting mad about pollen is like getting mad about rain or snow. It happens.

Good Lord man,

You're cleaning cars, not building the Great Pyramid at Giza, or the Holy Roman Empire. You're work is not going to last forever. And it shouldn't, or you won't have any repeat business, ever.

You're job as a detailer is to provide a service. Once the service is provided, move on.

Tough love going on here, but everyone is right.

I agree about doing a said good job and not hearing from someone again, we've all been there, you know you did the best you could and that's all that matters.

Sorry for coming back to post. goodbye.

Listen buddy, you came here and basically said you feel like giving up. You are saying this to people that have had worse customers then some one who doesnt return...

Hell when i was first starting out I first made a craiglist ad and used a picture off of google to show headlight restoration. I didnt have any yet but i could do a headlight restoration like a mofo so i figured "what the hell no one will know its not mine and i could do similar work if not better". I had some guy call me up saying im a fraud and he emailed the company who actually did that headlight restoration job and then he posted an ad on craiglist to warn others about me... Frankly i couldnt believe it as all the other pictures were mine and only the headlight one wasnt. I was extremely discouraged and embarrassed. But i kept going forward and didnt let that stop me.

Then my first job i undercharged and over delivered. He just wanted a wash and wax with a vacuum. I figured i would do such an amazing job that he would be so impressed he would tell everyone. So i polished the heck out of the car and shampooed the interior leaving no stone unturned. Well after i complete the job i get home feeling like a million bucks i thought to my self "finally things are looking up. Today was my first of many details! Hes going to be so happy with the turn around on his car and refer me to every one!" unfortunately that wasnt the case... I get an email from him saying that "the mexicans" at the car wash down the street charge a fraction of the price and clean the trunk. He then told me he feels robbed and i should be ashamed of my self for taking advantage of him... For one the trunk was never discussed and i went over everything i was going to do on the car before hand and the trunk was never mentioned by him or my self... But still it was a major kick to the nuts and i learned from it.

Basically what im saying bud is you cant let something as little as a non returning customer and pollen discourage you to the point of wanting to give up. With any business it requires a certain mind set and dedication. There are hurttles, problems, and downfalls. But without risk there is no reward. If owning a business was easy every one would do it.

With that said man you either need to buck up and keep moving forward or give up and work for some one else. You will deal with a$$holes in any business. You got to understand a bunch of people see what we do as washing a car and put it up next to mowing lawns. Personally those arent the customers you want but they do come around. You gotta be ready for it and not let it discourage you if you truly do want to own a detailing business. The thing is there are 2 types of people who do this for a living. There are people who love owning their own detailing business and there are people who are in love with the idea of owning a detailing business. Just because you can detail the hell out of your own car doesnt mean you should go out and make a business out of it.

So if the comments in here are bothering you, even after you asked for "a kick in the pants", maybe detailing as a hobby is better suited. Just my .02

Can I get an Amen my brothas?

This is a very tough business to start. It's understandable that you feel discouraged but this is a marathon, not a race. In the end you got to ask yourself if you are ready to wait for the clientele to pick up or not. If you have few or no clients you have to find other things to do until you do. That or decide on a very agressive marketing plan to increase sales.

I can't really emphasize more than has already been said. We all have our bad days right? Sometimes we just need to vent but I think you are going about it all wrong. Much like Brondon said you are venting to guys who have not only had struggles in business but in some cases life itself.

The grippe that you have sounds to me like you've never been challenged in life. Don't take that personal because none of us here even know who you are or what you have been through. Being successful is all about making mistakes and learning from them. We live and learn as the saying goes.

Meet your challenges head on brother don't get discouraged and give up at the first sign of distress. Cleaning one persons car doesn't mean the whole world is going to show up at your doorstep. You have to go out to everyone's door step and let them know you exist and why they should be going to you for your services. You're going to get rejected (you could fill out a hurt feelings report later) I'm just being honest. If you can't accept rejection running a business is not for you.

Like I said nobody is here to hurt you're feelings buddy it's just experience in life and in business talking. Instead of getting down about it take what we tell you and learn from it. You have to roll with the punches.

I'll leave you with this.

"Quitters never win, and winners never quit."
