Car show rant

In the future I will be much more selective on the shows I attend. No point in attending a show where the judge doesnt know a swirl from a squirrel and prefers red over black. Oh his buddies car is in the show also. Only shows with score cards and legit judging from now on. I do well in legit shows.
Boy I sure feel better getting this off my chest.
And to all a good night.

Why would you do that? Just go and have fun and don't expect to win anything. I have gone to shows before and left before the show was over. I was just there to see some cars and brought the Healey with me as long as I was going. I was tired and ready go go so I left. The next day I got a call to come pick up my trophy. I didn't even know there was going to be a trophy, not why I was there.

We've all been there...

I was at a car show about 3 years ago. All of the Corvettes were segregated by years; C6, C5, C4, C3, C2..... One of the "lot attendants" directed this girl driving a white C4 to park on the end of the C5 line. It may have been due to the lack of room but it's where she ended up.

Her C4 was white and not in particularly good shape but she on the other hand was very attractive and "well maintained". Since this was a spectators show everyone that entered was assigned a particular group of to judge. Apparently the tight shorts and tank-top gave her the necessary edge because she and her C4 took 1st place among the C5's.... :dunno:

Unless you're in a sanctioned event with professional paid judges consider them "entertainment"....

No disrespect intended to the OP.
Honestly I dont understand the whole car show circuit. Is it for verification that your car is nice? I mean, you know if your car is nice right? If its just for fun and to hang out with other cool car owners than who cares if you win. These posts remind me of parents at those kids beauty pageants, upset that the 'uneducated' judges didnt think their kid was the best. Every one at the car show thinks their car is the 'best', even though its purely subjective. For instance, personally, I hate chrome. If I was judging and I saw chrome on the car, it would get taken down a notch no matter how nice the paint. Its all subjective.

Dude- I feel your pain.

I know you are just supposed to go to these events and enjoy them, but when you put a lot of time into your car modding it, and keeping it pristine, it burns me a little when a bone stock, brand new car all swirled up gets pinned and mine doesn't.

Again, I know these little local shows are just for fun.

The one I went to recently they made the terrible mistake of insisting I judge. Guess what? I won.

Paint? Swirl-free.
Mods? I had more done under the bonnet than anyone else did.
Exterior mods? Again, still had more than anyone else.
I won in 3 different classes in my book.

I'm pretty sure I pissed some people off that day, but I can validate my reasoning to anyone. Hell, one guy came up to me afterwards and confronted me asking why his "brand new $45K MINI" (yeah, you read that right) didn't win. I flat out told him his paint looked like ****. Then I pointed to all the swirls in it that were painfully obvious in the sun. He shut up.

As for chrome? I'm not a fan... I even de-chromed my entire car... but I wouldn't not vote for your car for that reason. If it deserved to win, chrome or no chrome, then it would.

I'm in the no chrome on vette camp

The have minimal exterior chrome. Only on the vent in front of the door. I do have chrome under the hood. Not excessive but accents. My addons are subtle. Not in ur face.

We are on the same page. You should win when your car is better than the competition's. Some ppl dont understand the effort it takes to compete and then wonder where their trophy went to.

Cars were judged by the sales staff???
That explains everything.

My 79 Z28 was beat once by a 67 Mustang. We were both entered in the 70s class.

I'm also amazed at the number of people who wait till the last minute to register after they see how many cars are in each class.

I once saw a guy with an immaculate 57 Chevy remove a door panel, enter and win the under construction class.

I like to go to shows to hang out with other car guys and friends. Your at the mercy of the judges preferences. With a 79 z28, I don't expect to win!!

Removing a part to win a trophy, total DB!

Car shows around here are all a popularity contest or who's club has the most members present (so they vote for each other). I usually go to support the cause or to be cool other car people.

Three basic types of shows:
1: Everything original, OEM, judged as such, (preferably by qualified judges, with REAL judging sheets).
2: Basically stock cars, but with lots of bolt-on's, chrome, power adders etc.
3: Custom cars, mild-to-wild, anything goes.

The last two end up getting judged, (most often) by whomever they have on property. Or worse yet.... club members or CAR OWNERS (that are entered)!

I've won all over the southeast from the 80's to around 2001 when I stopped going. But I didn't show cars, I showed work trucks. Specifically, rollbacks (flatbed tow trucks). Once I showed up with a bright red 65 Mustang, with a white drop top that was a National Winner 5 of 6 of the previous years sitting there all nice and shiny on the bed... all weekend long. Won "peoples choice" with that lil' trick. ;) Of course I won in my division, but we ALWAYS had judges from the industry, as well as car show judges. But we NEVER had other owners doing the judging.

One year at the Atlanta show (didn't enter a truck that year, felt like it'd been a conflict because I was running the competition) I brought in nationally recognized judges. We made it clear that trucks entered in the "working class" had to have 5000 miles on them, and MUST HAVE WORKED in towing and recovery prior to the competition. One guy showed up with a truck with 5200 miles on it that was clearly brand spanking new. It was a big Peterbuilt, 60 ton boom on back, that he drove from Mississippi. (He'd won in the Mississippi show earlier.) Clearly the truck had never even used the winch before, much less worked in recovery. But the guy swore he'd worked the truck, just that he pulled the cables off, painted the winch drums, cable rollers, and put all new cables on it. So we let him enter the working class just to shut him up.

I told my judges we had a problem with it, but the guy had had a few drinks and we didn't want a fight on our hand. Next morning they and I went to judge the truck(s). My judging sheet was a 1000 point system, from the paint, to overall condition, interior, tools & equipment, DOT & ICC certification, safety gear, lighting, you name it. They even went under the trucks with creepers! That truck got a 2 point deduction I remember because there were 2 halves of a fly in the radiator!!!! Plus because it had so few miles on it there was a factor that the older trucks had built-in. Needless to say he didn't win in the "working class" (we got complaints all weekend BECAUSE he was even ENTERED in that class), but he did place 3rd.

Bottom line though is car shows should be more of a place to spend time with like minded individuals, enjoying cars, people, stories, and just having a good time. The trophy is a bonus, nothing more --- nothing less.
If you're there for the trophies..... might as well get a motor home and start going to dog shows. Just as many politics in that world as well!

The few isca judged shows I have been to have been pretty good. From what I have seen multiple judges go around the cars. Now these shows are usually multiple days as well as indoor.
At the last isca show I went to in Feb
