So first off I have been letting my business grow "organically" by word of mouth so things have been sort of slow. Cause I'm kind of unsure how I want this to go still. But anyways along came this customer. So I talk with him and long conversation short, he only wanted a wash... No wax no extras. I barely snuck in some glass cleaner. I didn't notice until after it was washed and dried that he had some pretty horrific holograms/marring :bat:. Naturally I was thinking about how to bring this up to him without seeming like I wanted more money or anything.

Before I could attempt he mentioned to me that he once had someone buff the car and it left overspray everywhere and it was a nightmare for him. So get this... he lets his neighbors kids (unsure of age) wax his car . I'm guessing they are the hologram/marring culprits. At the end of the whole transaction we were talking and I tried to give him my business card but it was quickly turned down so he saved my number in his phone. I explained to him that I would like to be his personal detailer. He said he gets the car washed about twice a month and would call me in a couple weeks.

So how do I build this mans trust with me?
How and when should I mention the holograms/marring?

I feel like I had other questions but I forgot them while typing all this out. But in case you were wondering I got lucky with $80/hr off this one :xyxthumbs:. So it's a win win besides the questions I was left with. Attached some pics but didn't take any close up pictures of the problems. Your feedback is very much appreciated.

Nice looking work and I'll bet the owner was pleased!

Here's how NOT to detail a Bentley..........

Is he aware of the damage to the paint? The reason I ask is purely a CYA!

I know he sees it, but I dont think he understands what it is exactly. Maybe he just thinks that's what happens when something is waxed. Good point on the CYA, that didn't even cross my mind at the time.

How about it!

When I watched this video for the first time I almost spit my water across my keyboard!!

It looks like you did a great job. Honestly, my guess is some people aren't interested in paint correction and don't care about protecting their paint. They just couldn't care less.

I think some people just buy these fancy cars as a status symbol. Sure it drives nice and everything - that's great. But, really they just want it to say "Bentley" or whatever on he hood. You would think it would be a no brainer to spend a few hundred $ to get a $200k car looking it's best - but they just don't care.

I don't understand it myself. It's like if I spent $200k on a house and never vacuumed the floors or cleaned the toilet.

OMG!!! I just saw the video feed for the 1st time!! Really? On a Bentley? Wow!! This guy thinks he is Good too!!

I was waiting for the joke, but wow!! Guys like him make detailers jobs much easier. But I digress. You can't fix STUPID!!

Thanks for making me laugh real hard today!!

I um...

Um...

I'm gonna need to sit down for a minute.

Did you... did you see his video on waxing????? He took an old rag and scrubbed the wax on!?!??! It was like watching one of those horror movies where the bad guy is right behind the protagonist. You just wanna scream at the screen!

And you thought professional detailers walk on water huh..........

I think the the term "professional detailer" has a ton of wiggle room in its definition....

Hopefully you get another opportunity to work for this guy. By the looks of the results, I think you will. I would tell the guy straight up that you appreciate his business and will be happy to continue working for him in the future. Tell him the last time you washed his car, you noticed the defects and really wanted to mention it, but you didn't want to offend him or seem like you were just trying to get deeper in his pockets. If you're genuine (which your original post sounds like you are) it will show and I'm confident that he will listen to more of what you have to say. I just feel like I do my best selling when I'm not trying to sell at all.

One can only wonder how the conversation would go between this guy and someone who is trying to explain to him the correct way of doing it.

I'm not a pro but I am a consumer so here is my opinion for what it is worth:

I like your honest approach, it's always the best business practice. The next time you wash the car for him, mention the swirls and offer to do the boot just to demonstrate the difference you can make. People who own Bentleys generally know other people who own Bentleys and maybe you could pick up some more work if these people notice how nice his trunk looks. He will either be impressed and have you do the whole car or he won't but either way, he will see what you can do. A pretty good chance for more business for 1/2 hour of your time and a little material.

I agree completely!!

I always do something extra on a customers vehicle, some subtle and some not so subtle.

I'll polish half the trunk or the top of a front fender as a "how it could look" or remove a stain from the interior. It nearly always results in additional work....:props:

should you ask before doing this?
:dunno: :)

That's honestly one of the best things I've ever heard.
