Is there such thing as an aftermarket engine brake for a gas engine? Auto manufacturers label the ones in new vehicles as downhill assist. If not, then is it safe to use the 321 on the gear selector (PRND321) for deceleration? I have a 4 speed automatic.

For gas I'm not sure. For diesel they do.

Yep. Put it in a lower gear and save your brakes!

Although, I wouldn't drop it to 1st if your going 60. Be reasonable!

I "THINK" at one time there was an engine brake (like a Jake Brake) for gasoline...was called a "William's Brake." What ever happened to it, not a clue.

As to dropping down a gear, one word...YUP!

By your "handle" does your truck have the Allison tranny? The Allison has a GREAT built-in 'tow haul' mode that really works great when hauling a heavier load, especially when slowing down.

It can be manipulated through tuning of the ECU. For example, guys who autocross or track their cars on the weekend usually tune in much higher engine braking in an effort to save their brakes.
Most manufacturers have pretty much tuned out any engine braking in an effort to maximize effienciency and gas mileage. One exclusion to this is the push button "towing" mode on some vehicles which will hold gears longer before shifting in addition the increased engine braking.

What year model mate .

Their s one that can be installed on driveshafts on big trucks , wonder if they make one for pickups . Don t remember the company s making it , saw that when I was a truck driver .

Ok , the way it was working was magnetic on driveshaft .

It wasn t this company , but it gives you an idea : Driveline Retarders

WOW!

Thank you for THAT link. I had completely forgotten about that device was out there.

I remember reading about 'it' some years back...the article (best I can remember) concerned those big monster trucks that are used in coal mining.

Thanx again...
