Caring for combination old/new paint

Hi. I'm new to the forum and have a 1965 Mustang fastback. The car wears about 60% of its original enamel paint, which is in good condition considering its age. Approximately 15% of the car is covered in lacquer from an old partial respray. It looks okay, but has typical lacquer cracking. The remaining 25% of the car just received a partial respray in waterborne base coat clear coat.

I've tried to do some research, but considering the different finishes on the car, I'm not sure the best way to care for the car or the best products to use on it for washing and detailing. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to autogeek online. I would look into the Wolfgang line of products. It is a very versatile product and they have an entire system that all works well together

Get some Meguiar's #7 Show Car Glaze and rub all this old single stage paint down using the #7. If it's faded, dull and oxidized then treat it by hand using a clean, soft cotton terrycloth wash cloth.

If it's shiny and clear then use a soft clean foam applicator pad by hand or a soft polishing or finishing foam pad using a dual action polisher.

The remaining 25% of the car just received a partial respray in waterborne base coat clear coat.

No real need to use the #7 on the new basecoat/clearcoat paint as it won't hurt but it also won't help much, especially since it's new or fresh paint. By this I mean it should be in great condition already.


For regular maintenance of all the paint, get a fine cut polish like the Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish and apply this by hand or using a dual action polisher like the Porter Cable 7424XP.

Then for a wax that will work great for a cool like a 1965 Mustang and also work on both types of paint, get a jar of Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax.
