I'm having katzkin leather put in monday. This is what I've been using on my leather chairs in the house. I was told its a good product. Honestly I don't know. Any opinionsView attachment 29091

You need something that will clean, and usually something else that will protect from UV

Bick 5 is among the very best. Ford King Ranch owners swear by it. The trick is to rub it in by hand, let it sit overnight if possible, then wipe any excess off. That's assuming the Katzkin is raw leather, not encased in a plastic covering.

I just ordered some leather honey. Got good reviews but says it can darken the leather. I'll look for that kit bob

I have Surf City's Voodoo Leather Rejuvenator. Had good results with that.

If the leather is coated with a polyurethane colorant followed by a clear coat (most modern leather), I'd stay away from conditioner type products.

These has been debated to death, but in reality my research tells me the two BEST things you can do for this type of leather is protect it and keep it clean.

I don't know anything about the previous mentioned products, but if it was me - I'd go with Leather Masters or CarPro's Fabric and Leather.

While conditioners are beneficial for non-coated leathers (like King Ranch) and for old damaged leather (leather where the colorant/clear coat has been abraded to a significant degree) - conditioners are a waste of time on leather in good condition.

In fact, there have been more than one report of someone causing the colorant to lift from the leather from using the "slather the seat with conditioner and let it bake in the sun" process.

While leather is a natural hide or "skin" that is not easily damaged by liquids, the top coat of colorant / clear coat is not. Its a man made synthetic material that is adhered to the hide. Ultimately, it is this coat we are all trying to protect or maintain that keeps the leather looking new - not the leather skin itself. So, protecting the top coat should be the best way to achieve this IMHO.

I'll call katzkin to see how the leather is made. Doesn't conditioners help for cracking

No.

Cracking is from not cleaning the leather. Leather absorbs dirt and crap. This becomes abrasive and damages the top coat. Eventually the coat will crack from these abrasions in high traffic areas of the leather. Usually it's not the actual leather that cracks, but the top coat colorant / clear coat.

Its like paint that is washed with a Brillo pad. Once the paint is abraded to a certain point, it will eventually look swirled or cracked. UV damage plays a part in paint damage, and possibly leather damage to a lesser extent - depending how the vehicle is configured.

Again, best thing you can do is keep it clean and protected.

If it's coated and you are looking for a good kit over the counter consider Meguiar's leather sealer system. It comes with a sealant and cleaner. Mothers leather wash an leather cream is also another good one.

Thanks for all the info. I'm gonna talk to katzkin to find out how its made

You r going to enjoy the Katzkin Leather great product, have it 2 years now,I went with black with red stitching. Looks like it came with the car,I was happy with the installer,I also added heated seats with it,very nice after the last winter! I have only used the mags products with it. If I had half a brain I would have a pic,I figure it out one day. I would also use it again, very impressed with them

:iagree: With this one for sure. Tried the Meg's leather kit last year when it first hit the shelves. Can't beat it with a stick for a $15 kit. :props: It's also enough to do 2~3 cars easy, (if not 4~5).

OTOH, I'm surprised there's no love for Leatherique. :dunno: (I've got a brand new $90 kit sitting here from my last order a few weeks ago, just that it's not the first thing you'd reach for with most vehicles though.)
