Made the 2" Electric Polisher!

Hello all, so after spending time thinking of how I was going to accomplish this. Finally made it happen.

I did talk to Kevin Brown over the phone and on Facebook. I tried cutting the backing plate how he does it in his video, but was unsuccessful that way. So I just got an exacto knife and cut it myself. I did use sandpaper like he does to smooth out the sides end though.

I'd like to add that the 2" pads were in fact bought from BuffDaddy.

I did try and cutting my own pads after I got all this together. However, Kevin Brown's pads were cut very precise and mine are still in the works. I'll figure it out though. :xyxthumbs:

nice! i've though about doing that but would probably destroy the backing plate lol. let us know how the 2" xtra-cut discs work with that. considering now the backing plate is smaller and the mf discs have no foam interface, i would imagine it would spin freely without bogging down the least bit...

can you post a short vid in action?

Will do and with a smaller backing plate it harder to make it bog down. It does generate a lot of heat though. I tested it out on what I could find.

Now I am trying to think of what I will be able to polish that I wasn't able to polish by hand.

Thanks and yeah me too. I'm sure I'll find something small with swirls ready to be polished out. The heat that it generated does worry me a bit. So we'll see.
 
Very nice Art the only thing you might have to worry about is the balance.
 
So anybody know how I can cut the pads to a 2 inch circle? Would be nice to know this as well. I went to my local art's and crafts store and they did have 2 inch hole punchers, but it was meant to cut paper not foam. Plus even if it did cut foam. It did not open wide enough to fit the foam pad in there.

I've gone to Lowes, Home Depot and Michaels arts and crafts store and nada... They did look at me like I was crazy haha

How so on the balance? and for it being such a little tool, it's kinda scary to think of putting it on paint lol. (Pretty powerful tool I created) :D

I now have 2", 3", 5", 6" and 7" :buffing:

hopefully, it won't be any different (vibration/balance wise) than like using a GG6 with the 5" backing plate (comes stock with 6") and 5.5" pads and/or 3" backing plate and 3"-4" pads as well...
 
Also I noticed that my 3" backing plate that I use for my PC fit perfectly. So this was an indicator to me that they had the same threading.

I have never really used the GG3 till now and I felt the vibration about the same with either the 2" and 3" BP.

As far as balancing goes. I am wondering if you meant that it might tip over when polishing?

The throw isn't that big, so what has concerned me more is the heat build up. Since this combo generates heat pretty quickly.

When I was polishing random things in the garage. I felt it was pretty balanced. So still not sure what you meant? :dunno:
 
Just an idea... why not use drill attachement backing plate (like the one in the 3M kit for headlight restorations) and do that mod. It will give you a rotary pad instead of a DA one, which will be much more precise for very small areas.

Actually I've seen that kit in stores, but have never seen what's inside. So wouldn't know...

They have a few kits. The one I am talking about comes with a small backing plate that accepts 3" foam pads and sand paper disks.

It goes into the drill's chuck just like any screwdriver or drill bit.

Since Cordless drills don't spin that fast (probably in between 600 and 1000 RPM), it would be very safe to use with foam pads. I think I will give it a try next time I have a small area to do. I normally use the GG 3" polisher, but I am thinking the drill would do a better job.

This way I can keep the GG polisher to apply sealants and waxes like I am doing now. And have a completelly different Platform for polishing and compounding small areas.

What advantage do you see in using a drill with rotary action vs a dual-action polisher?

The advantages I'd see is the drill/rotary with a smaller backing plate like a 3" or 2" generates heat slower than a DA with a 3" or 2" backing plate.

I have always thought that a rotary generates more heat than a DA?

Why would a rotary generate heat "slower" than a DA?
