I have two white cars in the family, a 2008 BMW 328 and a 2014 Ford Focus, and am looking for recommendations on best polish products for the "money". These cars are daily drivers. My limited understanding is that white paint is much harder than dark colors, so wondering what would be a good product to use for:

  • Swirl removal
  • cleaning wax
  • Sealing or finish wax
Feed back please

Thanks

Hello Mustang1971 :)

For swirl removal I would go with a compound/polish. Then do test spots to see what your paint(s) need.

I would just stick with one company just so your not jumping around and you can always call 1 customer service.

If I were you I would get my hands on Meguiars M105/M205. (You could go OTC and get Meguiars Ultimate compound and polish, but can't recommend them since I haven't used them yet.)

For a cleaner wax I would go with Meguiars D151.

And for a sealant I would go with Meguiars Ultimate Paste wax.

Also assuming your paint is base coat, clear coat. You won't be working on the white paint of your car or at least shouldn't be. You'd in fact be working on the clear coat of your car.

So if the base coat was a different color and the clear coat was EXACTLY the same. Then it'll respond the same. Just maybe show more or less, i.e. jet black for grey/silver.

I am a newbie so don't take it as expert advice: I used the Meguiars Ultimate compound and Polish on our white Honda and got good results for my first ever polish job. Oxidized paint looks like new. I applied with an orbital polisher - the cheap kind, it was a gift - and wiped with MF cloth. First we washed and clay polished by hand. All over the counter stuff.

White paint allows us to see the embedded contaminants in the paint more clearly. Brake dust spots that bond to your clearcoat show up much more noticeably in white colored cars that certainly don't come out during a regular wash. You'll need a clay bar or clay bar substitute to get these out. I personally wouldn't spend any time polishing anything unless I have a polisher tool. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish are really good over the counter products for swirl removal. But your best bet is to start with a good cleaning, a clay bar, and a wax and see how that looks. If you think it's necessary after that to go with a polish, then grab the combination above.

Iron X - Tar x ( or any tar remover) - Clay - Menzerna compounds and polishes. There sealant is top notch

Keep it simple.

  • Swirl removal Menzerna SF4000: a good polish that can probably keep you from doing a 2-step polishing exercise for quite awhile. Also, see this....

  • cleaning wax Mothers Carnauba Cleaner Wax, Mothers Synwax FX, Mothers Reflections. What I like doing here is a nice value-based product that works and then an awesome spray wax for a topper like Optimum Car Wax. The durability is very good!
  • Sealing or finish wax Collinite 915, Dodo Juice Supernatural Hybrid, Pinnacle Liquid Souveran, Collinite 845

Thanks

First, there's no assurance that your white paint is any harder than a darker one. Regardless, you have a DA machine; the battle is half over. You don't say what products, if any, you have now. One of your cars is 6 years old, the other new, so the paint on each is in different condition. That's crucial when deciding what polishes to use. Also, do you want the cars to look better than they do now or look the best they possibly can? The other issue is both are DD's, so I assume you're looking for good protection after the polishing is done. To decide which polishes are 'best for the money', you need to address all these other points; then you'll narrow down the choices to a small handful.

+1 Iron X, I did my white Camaro and you should have seen the all the purple spots from containments that came out.

Clay, polish, seal or wax....

As follow-up to the feedback provided, I do have a DA polisher, and the BMW is garaged and well maintained in terms of hand washing and trim maintenance. The Focus is my daughter's car and she is in college, so the car is kept outside in GA, so no salt to worry about, but lot's of sun.

I would like to keep the cars looking as nice as possible with a finish product to protect the paint, but am not looking to deliver a show car finish.

Hmm...tough one. I would recommend against M105 on a white car because it is so hard to see on white paint and M105 does not wipe off easily.

For your daughters car, an AIO might be the answer. I have used XMT360 on my dad's pearl white TL with good results. Its amazing how dirty the paint gets and XMT360 does a good job of cleaning the layer of road film. Or, maybe do a a polish, then top with Collinite 845. That will ensure good long lasting protection for her car as it sits outside.

You will even find that BMW Alpine White can vary in hardness depending on when and where the car was produced.

I have had great results with Menzerna products.

Depends how much time you want to spend working on it. Auto finesse tripple would be a good choice for you IMO. That way you don't need a bunch of products and multiple steps. If the paint is already in good shape DG501 or Zaino AIO are also very good on white. Tripple was better cut at fixing swirls etc though.
