A couple summers ago my Dad had his car painted from a red almost maroon color to his favorite black. Its been a terrible experience. The painter got in over his head on this one. He broke a ton of parts and couldn't align the doors and the list goes on. So we had to pay a real body man to align the doors and that is all set now but the paint I was left with was a pigtailed like crazy swirled up and hologram covered finish.

So finally my Dad and I had time to just give this thing a once over. I didn't want to go too hard on the paint because after painting I think it was wetsanded twice so I did not want to risk ruining the finish anywhere. I measured anywhere from 165 microns to 260 microns on the thickness which includes any paint that on the layer under the new finish.

I started off with a waterless wash and nanoskin fine wipe down. This is what I started with

Thats not just a reflection its holograms up and down

Not crazy visible because I am a bad photographer but holograms again on the hood

So we masked off the car and did Menzerna fg400 on orange pads only on the hood and trunk lid where the finish has severe pigtails and a few large scratches. then the entire car was hit with a white pad and menzerna pf2500 and then finished with a white pad with menzerna sf4000 using my griots polisher because my flex wont be here until monday.

Here is the after again I am sorry for lack of quality on my images I am working on my photography skills

Thank you. Lots of small details we want to fix on the finish but the painter wont give up the paint code and used a different black than we asked for. So we are dead in the water. The car is a driver though. My Dad and I drive it alot in summers so its never going to be flawless and I am ok with that.

Nice car! :xyxthumbs:

Is there a reason the painter won't give you the code? Seems odd that he'd hold it hostage.

We cant figure out what his deal is. Originally he quoted us 6 months on the paint work. It ended up being a full year. And thats a full year in which he didn't respond to most of our phone calls texts or any attempt to contact him. So when it was done i asked for the code and he said oh a painters tip never give the customer the paint code, guaranteed employment. Which made me upset because he would respond to fix any of the stuff he messed up. And after that he hasnt answered one phone call and blocked me on facebook. We paid the guy in cash and never complained or did anything rude. Just asked for the paint because we wanted someone else to fix the finish. We wanted to do no other business with the guy after this.

We wanted it done in honda nighthawk black peal which is a blue pearl over black. We ended up getting a black that seems to match my vw deep black pearl. It has almost a silver in it. So I am going to touch up the chips from the guy putting the doors back on with my black paint from my vw and hope for the best.

I need some more time with the car getting all the details done. We just tackled the paint. The interior is in nice shape just needs a good cleaning and wipe down and i need to get into the small things like door jams and pull the wheels and clean the barrels and just do a super solid detail on it. Between me moving to a new home and my dads work schedule and my schedule and him getting a new boat the gto has been pushed a side for too long.

Try calling your local PPG (or DuPont) refinish auto paint dealer and see if they have a portable spectral analyzer to try a computer color match. They may be able to get a very close match. Would be worth a try.

Gorgeous GTO ! Are those Cragar mags? They were almost mandatory back then.

I may stop in at the paint shop I know they have one of those things to analyze it but I need to get the tops of the 1/4's and the trunk lid resprayed so I need an exact match. And yes the are cragers. My dad's been in love with those wheels since he was a kid. I'm more of a torque thrust guy myself.

On that classic beauty, it might well be worth going to a paint pro who you can trust and have him dial in the match with test panels. Then you could have the code forever.

I just repainted my FJ40 with PPG Deltron using the original code from a 1985 Lincoln Mark VII that I sprayed it with when I built it in 1985. Perfect match even after all these years. Still think the painter you hired did a huge dis-service to you guys.

Thats what I am thinking is going to be the best shot. Spend the money up front and get it done right after this lesson has been learned. Just have to wait until its in the budget to get it fixed for now.

The worst part about the whole situation is the guy was a friend of mine. He works as a full time painter for a local high end dealers reconditioning department so I thought I could trust him and his work.
