What products for my exhaust?

My exhaust pipes have this black stuff on them. As does the muffler. I know everyone is going to recommend P21S finish restorer and polishing soap and I have no problem ordering those products. But is there anything over the counter that works? I'm about to go to college and I also don't want to order the P21S for just my car since I don't really do others.

In OTC, Mothers chrome / metal polish works. If really bad, Eagle one "never dull" has worked for me in the past.

I use CG's metal cleaners and polish now.
 
I'd try an APC with a brush, then steel wool 0000 (use clay lube when using the steel wool), then your choice of metal polish.
 
I have used steel wool and rubbing compound on some bad ones. I use Fg400 (menzerna) I would think any polish or compound would work. Do a test spot. I have also done this on a set of rusty chrome rims that I thought and the customer thought where junk and they came back great. Lots of time though.

What type of brush are you talking about? Like an EZ-Detail brush?
 
I recently worked on a Ford Mustang with aftermarket pipes. I didn't take a close up of them but you can tell in this pic they were BLACK!



I used a blue power ball from mothers, yeah, blue, it came with one of their headlight restore kits, found the kit to be crappy but found a use for the ball. (kit was on closeout for $10)

Used Mothers Mag and Aluminium polish on the ball:



Wipe down:

Any nylon/softer bristle one would work. I have cheap ones I use with my wheel woolies for my rims. I clean the exhaust with my rim steps.


I have one of those polishing balls from mothers too, I should try it out. It doesnt get used for anything.
