Buying a used car - '09 Hyundai Sonata

We have a 09 sonata with the v6, and 130k on the odometer. No major issues at this point. However I don't think I would buy a used one with that many miles on it.

As has been said, that's way too many miles. And IMHO having a mechanic look over a vehicle does nothing but give you a false sense of security. Did your mechanic pull the heads off? Did he visually inspect the transmission gears? See what I'm getting at?

Pull the heads off? For going on the last 30 years, well-maintained cars have been going over 200,000 miles without too much trouble. Hondas from that era (certainly by the late 80's) routinely would go 200K and would still have substantial value at 100K. I know guys who had lowly Fords and Chevy's who got 225-250K. I'm sure a 2009 Sonata is easily capable of 200K if maintained properly, and this car clearly has a lot of highway miles (which are a lot easier on the car than city/stop-and-go) to have accumulated so many in just 5 years.

I would look under the oil cap to see what I could, and check the trans fluid for smell(burnt, dark) all that stuff. We have a few Kia optimas over 250k come through still running.

It's hit or miss with a used car. It could live for another 200k, you may drive it off the lot and it die a week later. That car is worth about 4500-5k down here. Don't worry, benz, bmw, and Audi all have problems of their own too. They are not invincible, like the image is made to believe. Every manufacturer has problems of some sort. Just finding a good used car that hasn't been abused is tough around here. Remember, it's a used car. There is probably a reason the previous owner traded it off.

That said, in sound mechanical shape if you could haggle with them to get the price right, I would not hesitate.

Buying ANY DD with 155k that you want to KEEP for awhile is asking for trouble...

It very well may be a solid car BUT at 155k, if it hasn't worn out, been replaced, or repaired it will have to be soon.
