Hey guys,

I just bought a new car (black metallic) and want to keep it glossy and clean! I've been lurking in the forums for a while. After doing some research, I ordered the following:

Optimum Car Wash
ONR wash + shine
Ultima WWP+
Mother's California Gold Clay Bar
BFWD
Chemical Guys V7
Chemical Guys Inner Clean

Where do you think I should start? I thought there was wax on the car when I bought it, but it just rained and I didnt see beading.

My original plan is to use ONR, clay, BFWD, V7.

What do you think?

Depending on the paint and the clay, it can lead to some marring.
Should have some light cut polish handy just in case.

Should also have a DA.... not totally necessary but it is so worth it.

I guess the question is what option package did you get? Did you get the Dealer-Installed Swirl Option (DISO)? If you are like 99% of the new owners of black cars, you did.

As c8n suggested, you might want to rub the car down with something after the clay, like Prima Amigo, Poorboy's Black Hole, or one of the Wolfgang/Pinnacle/Blackfire pre-wax cleaners. Or even an AIO, like Blackfire Total Polish 'n Seal (TPnS) or Optimum GPS.

Will the BFWD adhere over a glaze like black hole? I was planning on getting BF gloss enhancing polish but thought it might be overkill.

Any of the kits that autogeek sells would be an easy choice.

I would recommend any of their house brands (Pinnacle, DP, Wolfgang, or BlackFire) but there are MANY good products here on autogeek.

A kit takes most of guessing work out picking products and they come in smaller sizes so if you do not like them, you aren't stuck with huge amounts of products that will go to waste.

The BFWD is great, only use the V7 as a maintenance detail spray. It's really not a sealant, more like a glorified detail spray, it is great stuff non the less.

Welcome to AGO.
What year and make is the vehicle? The condition of the vehicle/paint makes all the difference in the recommendations that will best suit you. That said, the products you ordered will work on most vehicles in good condition aside from one needing more in depth decontamination than just clay bar. Iron-X or a similar product would have been a good purchase as well considering the majority of vehicles, once driven, can stand to be decontaminated of iron particles/brake dust material. Another good product to purchase would have been an AIO or paint cleansing product, along with some Euro applicators. Klasse AIO and Pinnacle XMT 360 are two of my go to AIOs, and Wolfgang/Pinnacle paint cleansing lotions are my go to paint cleaners. Any of the products listed would prep the paint very well for the LSPs you ordered. A trim sealant like Ultima's or Wolfgang's would be a great purchase to lock in the new look of plastics, rubbers, and vinyls. Just make sure to clean any trim with an automotive finish safe APC Optimum Power Clean, before applying any products. Other than all that, your ride should maintain a shine with the products you will have on hand. Now if you have swirls and light scratches, that is a whole other topic for a different thread and or a forum search on your part.
Happy detailing.:)

Dual Action Polisher

Glaze and wax/sealant are tricky because some wax/sealant require a clean surface. Having a glaze, may interfere with the wax/sealant. Should check if BFWD requires a clean surface.

I already bought the above but next time ill consider a kit and stick to a brand.

Yeah I plan on using it for dust and bird poop.

It's a 2011 BMW. I was very close to getting XMT 360 but I removed it from my cart because it says it was made for machine application. I plan to do everything by hand.

So a AIO is necessary even with washing and claying? So after claying and before sealing, should I go with AIO or a polish?

If you don't have the budget for a Polisher and just want to car to look nice for now, you will want an AIO/cleaner wax (and that comes after the washing/claying). Mothers CaliGold Brazilian Cleaner Wax is very user-friendly for hand-application. If you're going to hand-apply, I recommend a polishing pal: Wolfgang Polishin’ Pal is an ergonomically shaped urethane handle that holds specially designed foam pads using hooks & loops.

An actual polish is best applied with a DA, unless you pick up some Swirl-X. I've hand applied that and it worked very well before I had a DA.

This article walks you through everything you want to do, that is the order of the steps. It's very detailed with LOTS of information and links and videos for even more information. A complete Newbie could read this article and know more than most detailers.

How To Detail Your Brand New Car by Mike Phillips

When it comes to the paint polishing side it covers working by machine. But fear not... here's an article that walks your through how to work by hand and it too is very detailed.

How to clay, clean and wax paint by hand with Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion and Pinnacle Signature Series II Carnauba Paste Wax

So a AIO is necessary even with washing and claying? So after claying and before sealing, should I go with AIO or a polish?

An AIO is a Cleaner/Wax. These are the exact same category of product, zero difference. Some people like to use the term AIO I prefer to use the term cleaner/wax but they mean the exact same thing. These types of products do three things in one-step....

  • Clean
  • Polish
    Protect

Since your BMW is 3 years old, chances are the paint could use cleaning. You can clean paint without removing swirls and you can clean paint and remove swirls.

If you're working by hand you're mostly going to clean paint without removing swirls because the paint is simply too hard for the human hand to be effective, that's why you'll find most people eventually move up to machine polishing.

So to clean your paint you have three options,

1. Use a dedicated paint cleaner also called a pre-wax cleaner.
These are mostly chemical but do a great job of cleaning the surface of impurities, stains and light oxidation. In the second article I linked to above I'm using a paint cleaner on the Lexus.

2. Use a dedicated fine cut polish.
A QUALITY fine cut polish can be applied by hand and will do everything a paint cleaner will do PLUS remove some very fine or shallow swirls and scratches depending upon your skill to move an applicator pad over the paint.

3. Use a cleaner/wax.
A cleaner/wax will clean, polish and protect, so it will do what a paint cleaner and a fine cut polish will do and leave some wax protection all in one step. Some people use a cleaner/wax AS THERE Pre-Wax cleaner and then wax over it. The most famous example is the Klasse Twins.

If it were me? Well I have access to machines so I'd do it all by machine. If I were you? I'd hand apply a fine cut polish after washing and claying and then apply a wax or paint sealant.

Get a copy of my how-too book, while it covers removing defects by machine as well as machine polishing and waxing, it's LOADED with tons of other information that will help you take care of your BMW by hand.

Thanks Mike and CDot for the informative links.

I ended up buying some Poorboy's Black Hole. Now it just looks like I need Iron X before claying.

So my last question is for the initial wash. Can I use dishwash liquid to strip everything off before going through the steps?
