New from Sonax: CutMax & Perfect Finish EX

That bottle with the green tape is the second step with the Flex 3401 on the old Ford in the below write-up. I did do some machine wet sanding and following the sanding I used the Flex PE14 for the heavy compounding.

:xyxthumbs:

So you wetsanded with the new Flex tool?

Took out your sanding marks with the PE-14 using FG400?

Then you put the final spit shine on the paint using the 3401 with which Menzerna product? I'm sure you've mentioned this already.

Feed back please

No... not sure where you got that? :dunno:

I do almost all my machine sanding with either the Griot's 3" Polisher that I use as a machine damp sander or the Porter Cable 7424XP.

I can't imagine not having this tool for doing this kind of work on these kinds of cars. The 3" polisher is a must-have tool for anyone that doesn any type of machine wet sanding.

  • Small footprint
  • EASY to control for precision sanding
I also show this in all my detailing boot camp classes.... here you go.... this is how you do it....

Hey Mike, do you find it easier to use the pc for sanding over something like a 3m electric palm sander? I ask because I am very interested in trying out sanding and it looks like the electric palm sander would be the most comfortable to use.

Yes.

I ask because I am very interested in trying out sanding and it looks like the electric palm sander would be the most comfortable to use.

To use an air sander you need a strong air compressor and a large capacity air tank as these things are air hogs.

The PC and the 3GG work awesome for finish sanding. If you read enough thread and look at enough pictures you'll see that's about all I ever use.

Nothing against air DA's but the one thing ALL of them missed the boat on was a ratcheting throttle so when you set the speed to where you want it, it will stay there.

What they all use currently is a sliding throttle and it's SO EASY to bump them with your thumb or finders as you grasp the tool and sand with it.

While I was in Italy as guest of Rupes, at their National Sales Meeting the topic of the Skorpio came up and I respectfully pointed out this issue and made the suggestion that changing to a ratcheting throttle would be a popular improvement.

I like both the 3M and the Rupes Skorpio, both work great for machine sanding....

Here's the Cutlass with 2-3 coats of PPG clear that's about 6 months old..

Since Autogeek carries the complete Rupes line I decided to test out the Rupes Orbital Air Sander for this project. Most of you reading this will likely never need to sand down an entire car but if you are ever going to tackle this type of project you can do it by hand or machine.

I'm a machine guy...

That's a 3M 6" foam interface pad on the Rupes 6" backing plate to help the sanding discs conform to curves.

This is Orange Peel, this is how the entire car looked before I sanded it down...

WARNING
Anytime you're machine sanding with something as aggressive a 500 grit sanding discs... focus on the task at hand... also make sure there's plenty of paint on the car to sand before you start.

These discs are perforated for use with vacuum dust extraction. I didn't bring a vacuum with me so I used it without vacuum. The Rupes is outfitted for use with a vacuum and the 3M interface pad does have air passage holes.

Anytime you're dry sanding, especially by machine, be sure to wear the appropriate safety equipment...

With 500 grit sanding discs you can knock a panel with orange peel down to flat as a chalk board in no time flat...

what speed are you using on the 3GG to damp sand with something like 3K or 5K grit ?

All you need is to be able to maintain sanding disc rotation, so believe it or not you can do this on the 2-3 speed setting.

But to get the job done in a time-conscience way you're going to be on or around the 4 setting.

Just mark your backing plate to make it easy for your eyes to monitor if the backing plate and thus sanding disc is rotating.

Sönax Cutmax and EX 04-06!

I was able to do some documentation of these two and while I can let out all my secrets I can say this care was hacked up with holograms and DISO everywhere. I will let the photos do the talking! The car was coating with PBL after

Oh by the way can you say low to zero dusting!

Has there been any announcement of when these 2 new Sonax products will be released? I'm really looking forward to trying out Cut Max :buffing:

Sonax USA is shooting for the early part of December!

What is the difference betwen ex and the other one without ex

How would u compare the performance, cut and finish to fg400 and 2500?

How would u compare the performance, cut and finish to fg400 and 2500?

CutMax has a great cut and long work time. I have no issues removing 2500 grit sanding marks with CutMax as well. It always can finish down rather well

EX04-06 is a great polish that against has such a long work time and can produce great gloss.

Both of these are water based and offer very little to zero dusting.

I have been using these now for well over a year and a half and u have been very pleased with my results. The great thing about any Sonax Product is that you only need a small amount of product.
