Can someone explain me what it means using pictures? I have heard this term quite a bit, don't know what it means. :(

The lower the number, the deeper the scratch

Heavy cut compound on a rotary with a wool pad can remove 1200 grit scratches

Heavy cut compound on a DA with a cutting pad can remove 1500 grit, but it will take awhile

Hope that helps

It's not "grit sanding", it's "xxx grit, sanding marks", i.e. the marks left by sanding with whatever grit (1000, 2000, 3000) sandpaper you were using. Because the grit/sand/abrasive is nominally the same size for a given grit size/rating, a compound might be rated by grit size marks it can remove, like for instance Menz FG400 is rated for removal of 1200 grit sanding marks.
