This is going to be a long post, but I thought it might be useful to other forum members to share my experiences with the below listed sealants, coating, and other lsps, especially as it relates to Ford's White Platinum Tricoat paint. For those of you that don't want to read through this whole post, please scroll down to a few pics of my Sonata wearing DP Paint Coating and Sonax Polymer Net Shield.

My silver 2013 Sonata Limited has been wearing DP Paint Coating on the hood and Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant on the remainder of the paint since last fall, with intermittent toppings of a few different products in 2014 (D156, Wolfgang Spritz Sealant) over the sealant and couple of toppings since May of Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer on the hood.

My car is a garage kept daily driver, alternating between short in town commutes and a couple of days where my wife drives 100 miles round trip for her work commute.

I have been happy with the durability of the DP coating on the hood, and DGPS is a favorite of mine also. Up until this summer, I would have been satisfied with using either of these products for long term winter protection. However, in June I prepped my wife's Ford Edge with DP Paint Coating, and topped that with a coat of Sonax Polymer Net Shield.

WOW! I have been blown away by the performance of this combination on the Edge, namely the water shedding ability, ease of cleaning/reduced dirt buildup, and resistance to water spots. The Edge has the White Tricoat paint, and nothing that I had previously used on this paint in the past lasted nearly as long as when used on other vehicles where I used the same prep and products.

Since 2012 I have tried the following products on the Edge: Wolfgang DGPS, Duragloss 501/601/105, and DP Paint Coating by itself for 2 weeks. The paint was prepped and stripped each time before switching the lsp.

The Wolfgang lasted a lot longer for me than the Duragloss combo, but the sides of the vehicle always seemed to get dirty quickly, and the dirt did not release nearly as easily as on my sonata and other vehicles that I had protected with sealants.

I only had the DP PC on the Edge for two weeks before topping with PNS. While the DP was very slick, I was still disappointed in the way dirt stuck to the sides and did not release easily when performing a two bucket wash with a wash mitt.

After the PNS, the Edge stays so much cleaner, and dirt releases easily with a light stroke of the wash mitt, the same as I have previously experienced with the before mentioned sealants on other vehicles.

Okay, back to the winter prep for the Sonata. After my experience with the Edge, I simply had to use the DP/Sonax combo for long term protection. Since the car was still pretty clean from its last wash, my prep was as follows (completed on Sunday):

Rinseless wash using DP Rinseless W&G
Pinnacle poly clay
Polish hood, rear deck lid, and rear bumper area with Flex 3401, 5 inch black hybrid pad.
Polish front end with Flex PE14.
DP Prep Polish applied to all paint with Flex 3401, black hybrid.
DP Paint Coating on all paint.

On Tuesday it was raining. I pulled the car into the garage after work and dried the glass roof, windows, hood, pillars, and deck lid. The windows were previously treated with Nanoskin rain repellant, and periodically topped with Megs D156 spray wax. I decided to apply Sonax BSD to the roof and all windows. I did not strip or prep the glass before this application of BSD.

I had coated the windshield with Pinnacle Glass Coating last fall, and while it is still working in downpours and at higher speeds, the performance has fallen off, and it is ready to be stripped and recoated. So, I applied Sonax BSD to just the driver side of the windshield as a test to see how much improvement it would make in the rain until I reapply the glass coating in the near future.

I then applied Sonax PNS to the hood, pillars and decklid. I did not have time to apply it to the rest of the car, but I will do that before the end of the week. I will also be prepping the wheels to reapply DP Wheel Coating.

For those of you that are still with me, onto a couple of pics. I took these around 8:30 am this morning after arriving to work. The sun was very low in the sky and very bright. Pics were taken with my Iphone 5.

Thanks for looking!

All that water handling capability is from the PNS, just applied mine today! I think you would be very pleased with just the PNS but obviously the coating under it doesn't hurt. It actually was originally designed as a topper for Sonax's coating.

Amazing looking Hyundai you never see a clear depth reflection on these kinds of cars just swirls etc....keep it looking amazing

Just an observation:
With the use of "intermittent toppings of a few different products"...can there be any factual durability claims
of the underlying LSP-products?

However:
:iagree: with the below remarks regarding PNS.

Wow I knew you would post on this one Bob. But I figured it would be something to do with PNS being an aresol, not me being quoted I feel honored :props: .

That result is primarily from PNS. I've been raving about it for months, and in fact I will say it again...its a game change. It sheds water and dirt like nothing I've used in 35 years and that includes all the recently popular coatings I've tried. I no longer use the 2 bucket wash. Its as close to achieving touchless washing as anything on the market. I foam, power rinse, and final wipe with waterless wash. Done. In winter I take the car through a local touchless commercial wash. The car looks perfect afterwards. I've never seen any product like Sonax PNS. Is that clear enough?

And for you waxahoics....it has a carnuba look to it...no sealant or coating looks like PNS that I've seen.

Beautiful work Dan! The finish glows and my feeling is you've got yourself some fine protection for the harsh months ahead....:props:

I don't doubt that I would be happy with just the PNS alone, but as you said the coating underneath doesn't hurt. Since coatings can be prone to water spotting, I think using both products provides the best of both worlds, so to speak.

Thanks James. I have had the car for 18 months, and I enjoy having it look good. It's a lease, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't keep it up, right?

I hear ya, Bob. I'm not one to always top Lsps. In the past I have separately used DGPS and Megs 21 (I know you are a big Megs fan, and my opinion is that 21 is equal to DGPS) without topping. In fact, last November when I did the aforementioned winter prep with DP coating on the hood and DGPS on the rest of the paint, I did not use any toppers through out the entire brutal Ohio winter that we had. It was only at the end of winter/early spring when I started to top. The DP was still holding strong at that time, and the panels with DGPS seemed pretty good also. I am just very impressed with the DG/Sonax combo, and I don't care which one is working best/longest.

I agree, PNS is a game changer. Not that I wasn't impressed with the beading and sheeting performance of the DP coating, but PNS takes it up another notch, or two, or ten, or....

Here is a picture of the beading I had November 2013 from the DP paint coating alone:

Here is a picture of the beading September 2014 after topping the 10 month old DP with Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer:

What the photos don't show is the tremendous increase in water shedding that the Sonax products provide.

Beautiful work Dan! The finish glows and my feeling is you've got yourself some fine protection for the harsh months ahead....:props:

Thanks for the compliment Bobby! It means a lot coming from you. I believe I am well protected, and unfortunately I will find out sooner than later. Just today I came across a pic from last winter, and realized I am not quite ready to see this again:
