Key drop box

OK, buddy of mine is a used car dealer. He said if I get a drop box he will start leaving cars for me. Now this is my garage so I can't do a regular slot one (or maybe I can and don't see how that'll work, and look OK)
So on to the question. What does everyone use for a drop box for customers? I wanna see pics PLEASE. AND THANK YOU!!!!
 
Subscribed, I've been thinking about this too for people who drop off while I'm out at a job.

Searched their site. I need one that will be waterproof (obviously). Been thinking about just disguising a hole in the wall with an outdoor outlet cover. Then mount a basket or something a foot or 2 under it inside the garage.

Will it be his employees dropping off the keys?
 
No, just his self. He's a tiny dealer out of a home shop. Probably 2 cars a month average

Max, thank you, I saw those and they mostly seem to be for mail (too thin for most remotes and keys) plus with the slot they don't look very water/snow proof. Thirdly I really don't want some big box mounted to the side/front of my garage or house. I need something sorta discrete and weather resistant at least.

It sounds like you work from your home garage. Can't they just be dropped off when you're there?
 
2 cars a month for just him and then other customers could use it too.

No, most people cant while I am home cause I work 2nd shift. They are working while I am home and I am while they are. Its much more convenient for people (90% of them have) to drop it off after dinner and pick it up the next day after dinner. The rest have either had me pick up or drop it off on a weekend.
 
Why not cut a mail slot in the garage door, and screw a basket or box to the back side below the slot (so the keys and fobs don't drop four feet to the floor)?

Good suggestion but I was wondering if there was maybe something a little less "gaudy" something that doesnt stick out like a sore thumb. Hidden. Are ya picking up what Im layin down? lol
 
No, I guess I'm not. Gaudy? It's an 11"x2½" rectangle on a garage door...
 
Rock is cool if a remote will fit in it too. Also an 11x2 slot in a wall or door doesn't seem excessive to you for a key and remote? I was trying to make it look a little more natural like the outlet cover idea...potential bad guys may just think its an outlet and not try to get a customers keys out then.

I've had a mail slot in my garage door since I bought the place. It never occurred to me that it is any more gaudy than a mailbox, wall sconce or any other detail of a house. :confused:

ETA it just occurred to me that maybe not everyone has ever seen a "mail slot." It's not just a rough cut hole in a door!

Did that very thing a few years ago.
Search your local hardware store for a mail slot with a door. Most of them are wide enough for remotes and you can match your exterior decor. I screwed a small wire basket from the office supply store on the inside of the door to catch the keys. You just have to remember to check it before you raise the door and have the remotes drop six feet when the door goes horizontal.

P.S. If you cut a slot in a hollow door, remember to bridge the gap so the keys don't fall inside the door. Don't ask me how I know!
