AG still setting off anti-virus alerts!

Ok, one of you guys that knows computers or viruses. If there is a link or picture that isn't showing up in one of these threads and you click on it will it infect your computer? McAfee recently found a virus on my computer and I'm wondering if maybe that's where it came from??

Your AV software should tell you details about the infected file, such as location and time it was created. This should help you determine the cause of infection.

Also, those using Avast, or even McAfee....I'd strongly suggest looking at something more reliable such as Kaspersky. When I did IT, that's what I installed for my clients/businesses. Its highly regarded.

If anyone has AV questions, feel free to PM.

RedXray & StangFan - Excellent advice! My tiny little job in retirement, is cleaning infections, & computer repair.

Buy a pick up truck or let it be known you fix computers, & wow you become very popular.

All AV's have a place in "settings" where you can exclude, stuff you know to be safe.

Kaspersky KAV or KIS (kaspersky anti virus, or kaspersky internet security), is the 'gold standard' year after year, by a good margin, so say's, multiple testing orgs. It's a little pricey!

Keep in mind free software AV's (bitdefender, avast, etc) offer free versions, as an inducement, so you will purchase later. The free version have to be great, or you will never pay for the paid version.

I recommend to all my client(s) who wish to go the free route 360safe. c.o.m. Product 360 Total Security, (free excellent phone protection product as well). It's always free, the strategy, is give the product away, then, the happy camper will mention it at work, then charge corporate clients.

360Total offers just some features, analyze optimize startup, you can easily knock 10 - 30 seconds off booting process

They license the Avira & Bitdefender AV engines, cloud scanning & a proprietary AV engine, all in one package.

It runs very lite!!!

Free sandbox no malware can survive, a sandbox.

Free browser protection
Free superior FW
It will patch (apply updates) to your software.

It's like going to the county fair (It slices, it dices & even walks the dog), but it works.

It's from China, but whats not anymore.

ALWAYS ALWAYS go on line DOWNLOAD your candidate for replacement AV, then go "OFF LINE", then "UNINSTALL" your old AV, then install the new AV. U don't want to go online without an AV & you don't want two AV's fighting each other.

Nice to see a fellow comp "geek" here. I still have companies and people calling me to repair and disinfect systems despite not doing it for years. I lost the patience for it! Some people just never learn...I had one customer pay $250 for me to eradicate her massively infected PC, only to infect it a week later!

I generally do computer work for trade, barter system. Some folks I can get through to, other are just lost. For those lost souls, I do a big sales job for "Shadow Defender" costs $35.00, lifetime license & NEVER NEVER go on line, or read email, without being in "Shadow Mode" (a persistent, always on top SM icon, informs your in SM), now it's impossible to become infected. YOU MUST BE SQUEAKY CLEAN BEFORE INSTALLING "SD", AS IT ONLY SHIELDS. Be in SM, your AV if you choose, to continue to use, can go crazy, alert you to problems etc. You just reboot & nothing can survive. Because it did not happen, you were in a virtual machine in SM. You will not ever experience a slowdown, or incompatibility. See shadowdefender.c.o.m.

Nice to know another geek, so were geek squared:xyxthumbs:

A big thanks to StangFan25!! With his help I was able to get rid of virus problems on my computer. I trade stocks from Sept. 1 til April 30 and I didn't feel comfortable doing so with a virus on my computer. Now I can go ahead with confidence. Thanks again StangFan25!

My pleasure. Glad I could help. Any stock tips? Lol 😀

So give us some tips. I've got a new laptop. Has McAffee on 30 day trial on it and I've had it about 2 weeks. Not a fan of Norton, or Kaspersky, nor McAffee and thought about going with AVG free.

All I've done thus far is AGO and some 'how-to music related' youtube videos. I've not put my 2010 MSOffice on it yet, nor have I put any of my old files on it yet, pics, or anything else. Strictly surfed the web and trying it out since I'm within the 30 day return policy.

It seems MS wants you to create an account and I didn't want to do that. Now it's asking me to verify who I am which leads me back to making and account with Microsoft. All I want to do is turn the computer on and go. I don't need all that junk...at least I think I don't.

Why don't you like Kaspersky?

Why don't you like Kaspersky?

1. I prefer U.S. made products when I can get them, which isn't always possible.

2. It's like Norton, once it's activated you can't get rid of it even with their removal tool. I had that problem on my computer as well as an entire office full of computers.

I've had Webroot, TrendMicro, Norton, Kaspersky, AVG free, and now McAffee. May go back to AVG free, but I'm not sure. They've all caused me fits though, but at least I didn't pay for them with AVG...which actually gave me less problems than the others.

3. Kaspersky was the worst as far as letting the computer start up and shut down with the constant updating. Ridiculously too much time for both.

1. I prefer getting the best I can afford, regardless where it's from.

2. Norton is horrible. Symantec on the other hand, is a lot better. Same company but Norton is consumer grade crap and Symantec is aimed more towards business and network. But can be applied to home environments.

The reason the free products gave you less "problems" is because well, they're free and don't really do much. With the exception of MalwareBytes Anti Malware. Although their paid version is much better.

3. I've installed Kaspersky in more than 25 computers, including my own and have never had the issues you've described. Perhaps your computer didn't have the RAM needed to run Kaspersky. And just about any AV program allows you to schedule updating or do it manually.

Good luck with whatever you choose. Myself, I wouldn't ever choose to secure my computer with subpar programs. Especially when you consider all the sensitive documents and banking most do online.

Forgot to add....I hope you have formatted the drive if you've installed all those AV programs on the same pc. Whether they were at different times or not. Your registry is more than likely clogged with all those AV foot prints. You can uninstall programs but there's always left over stuff in the registry. And that many AV programs.....

Normally (not always) free AV's have to be superior, products, or else, you would never pony up for the paid version.

Example for quite sometime Avira free, tested better (independent testing labs), than there paid product.

You can also use the free (yes they have a paid product) Revo uninstaller. Great program, after using the free version, I paid for there commercial product. Revo in addition to running the products, built in Uninstaller, then deeply scans, registry, and c:\ for remnants normally left behind, & by the unisatlled program's uninstaller

I just opened that link on my laptop and desktop, and had no alerts or anything from Kaspersky.

it's ok for me now too. what's odd is with Chrome, it wasn't even my a/v, it was simply resetting.

however, do this:

google "autogeek milano pink"

this is the search for me: https://www.google.com/search?num=3....0....0...1c.1.64.hp..9.12.1235.0.FhbtEpBZxUY

the first real link, not an ad that comes up - click on that.

it should say May 21, 2015 - 10 posts - ‎6 authors.

see if your computer does anything that way.

Did as you requested....nothing happened.

EDIT:...stupid AG attachment limits. for a forum so dependent on visuals, it's hilarious that they limit attachments in this manner. anyway, hold on pls.

EDIT2: ok, here -

i can report it as a false positive, but as you can see, this isn't the first time (i originally created this thread, haha)

Can you upload a crop of the AV box in bottom right, so I can read what it says?
