I have a Porter Cable 7424 XP that I have been using for detailing my own cars. Stumbled across one of Mike Phillip's videos on Making the Metallic Flake POP! I'm interested in getting some new pads and polishes for my DA polisher and could use some advice. That video is quite a few years old so I'm curious if the Optimum Hyper spray products and Lake Country pads are still the best product available or has something come out to make the job even easier?

I'm looking for intermediate level swirl correction and something that will make the factor metallic flake pop on my car.

Thanks for your input!

Definitely get a 5" backing plate so you can run 5.5" pads. This will allow a bit better power than using 6.5" pads.

The new Meguiars discs are great for this machine. As for chemicals, take your pick between Meguiars, Menzerna, Wolfgang, or Optimum.

I will suggest something that isn't even paint related

The Cyclo Brushes work incredibly well on the PC for scrubbing tires, carpets and Upholstry

Huge time saver!

Agree with this. I'm a Meguiar's user so I use their D300 compound and M205 polish.

I would suggest who makes the pads is not that critical. Buy whatever you fancy. Optimum Hyper Polish is a nice polish and does provide a very valid alternative to 205. However, as good as these products are, they are limited in terms of absolute cutting capabilities and depending on the paint you may need something stronger. As with my view of pads, who makes the polish is not that critical. Learning to get the best from whatever you own is more important

:iagree:

Never tried the Optimum products, but I think I just watched the video he was talking about.

Totally agree with the pad assessment.

Hyper polish is a very versatile user friendly product. Amount of cut is dependent on what pad you use, cutting, polishing, finishing. I think for a compound I would go with the Menzerna FG400, the Hyper Compound doesn't seem to have much cut on a PC with foam pads. Pads the Meguiars discs are nice pads, so are the LC flat pads.

If we had a "Thanks" button Kyle, I would have hit it for you. I forget about these when I order items.

I would say you're in good hands with Buff and Shine, Lake Country, Meguiar's, and any reputable manufacturer.

Read this, not just the first post...

Video: Mark your backing plate to make it easy to see pad rotation

Get any of these brands for compounds and polishes, they all work great with the PC and the LC Flat pads....

Pinnacle Advanced Compound and Finishing Polish - This is what I switched Wayne Carini's shop over to.

Menzerna FG400 and SF4000 - This will work on anything.

Wolfgang Uber Compound and Finishing Glaze - The glaze is not really a glaze but a fine cut polish and these two products will fix anything.

Meguiar's M101 and M205 - These two products will fix anything.

Optimum Compound and Finish II - These two products will fix anything.

Sonax Fine Abrasive Paste and Nano Polish - These two products will fix anything.

That's the short list but they all use great abrasive technology.

Completely agree with Dlc95. Any reputable make of pads or polishes will all do a good job. Over the years I have tried many different brands of polishes, some I really liked, others less so but I would ague the brands I did not like would still do a great job. I do not really like the 3M polishes although I am a huge fan of their pads for a rotary. If my only choice for polishing was 3M, I think I would still get a decent shine with the paint.

Choosing the right product at the right time and showing an understanding of how to get the best from it, is, in my view more important than who made it. I am not wholly unbiased when it comes to brands, I really like a lot of the Optimum stuff and these days I use M101 and Hyper Polish on my car as they work perfectly for me. If I was forced to use Menzerna or some other big brand, I am not sure I would loose any sleep over it.
