Hey all,
Back in October I put a coat of deep gloss sealant on my girlfriend's Passat-after watching it sit covered in salt (black car looks grey now) in my driveway I decided to bring it in to work tomorrow and wash it and put another coat of WGDGPS on. Doing it before work so was hoping to do it quick, but I also have some griots paint prep to strip if I need to. Haven't decided what wash to use-WG, optimum, or megs gold class. So I'm throwing it out to you, do I strip the old before the new?
Thanks in advance!

Since it isn't beauty contest season and the snow/salt combo is still in the air, I would say wash it good and recoat.

I did the same thing when it was 45 degrees last month, with Collinite 845 to boost the October Collinite. I did do an ONR rinseless instead of a 2 bucket wash.

Id just wash it and recoat it for now. Come April/May do a full correction and fresh application.

I'd just thoroughly wash (and then dry) it.

•Although it wouldn't hurt a thing to apply
more WGDGPS at this time...
-How would you know, for sure, it needs
to be "refreshed" after just 4 months?

•Also, and more importantly IMO:
-Will there be an allowance for a moisture free
12 hour cure-time?

Anyway...
When you want to totally strip the WGDGPS:
Use a fine, or even an ultra-fine Polish.
Car-wash shampoos won't do the trick.

IMO I would do the "baggie" test, clay, strip the old stuff and then add the sealant. This is "regardless" if you need to or not.

4 months in harsh weather IMO is hard on the paint and too many environmental factors that need to be exfoliated from the paint.

Sorry for playing devil's advocate....but that is what I would do. IMO, this will be a weekend thing not a before work thing.

Do a baggie test. If anything, a good wash and fine clay would do the trick, then apply a fresh coat. WGDGPS is a solid sealant, and even the harshest chemicals have proven no match to remove it. Fine clay will likely not damage the existing coat, so applying another layer would be fine.

A fine/finishing polish would definitely remove the existing coat, although not worth all the trouble IMO.

If you are covered in salt, you are in Winter weather. In those conditions, I do a good wash and finish with a good spray wax. (Souverain Spray is my go to product). It's quick. It's easy and I like the look of Souverain. Then when Spring comes, I do a light polish any touching up I need to do and a new coat of sealant.

Having said that, I coated my daughter's car last Summer and my wife's new car this Fall and they look great as of now. Hope to post some pictures of my daughter's car which hasn't been washed in 3 months and has been literally coated with salt. The recent rains washed all the dirt off the coating and it looks freshly washed. I'm becoming a believer in coatings!

Thanks for all the input guys, I was up early to use the garage at work and ended up just washing drying and put another coat on. I probably didn't *need* to apply it but I already had my DA with me so why not? Didn't have time to clay and use a light polish, that'll probably wait til April like every other year.
On a side note, noticed what I think are the beginning of cc failure. 8 year old car, some chips, pits, and some rust. Worth it to put on some pbl coating in the spring? That is if she doesn't get a new car by then, I wouldn't mind having something different to play with!

Looks like another foot of snow this weekend...the 1 year I don't have a snowmobile, figures.

What'd you coat with? I have some CQUK and PBL surface coating waiting for the spring. Based on the expiration date on the Cquartz I'll be coating a few cars in May!

I coated the paint with PBL Paint Coating and the wheels and windshield with PBL Surface Coating. I expect to post some photos of the unwashed car in a separate thread tomorrow.
