New Michelin tires were purchased for this 2000 Camry around the end of December 2014. This was a good opportunity to compare the two coatings - DP Tire Coating & Tuf Shine Tire Clearcoat.

After thoroughly cleaning the tires, two coats of DP Tire Coating were placed on the passenger side tires and two coats of Tuf Shine Tire Coating were placed on the driver side tires on January 5, 2015. I only had a couple good pictures of the initial application.

Here's two coats of DP Tire Coating - Front passenger side.

6 Week Update - Feb 16, 2015

The car is normally parked in a carport in West Palm Beach, FL most of the time but daily driven within a few miles from the house.

During the 6 weeks, the car has been rained on a couple of times and been driven on wet roads a few times.

The tires have been washed about 3 times during the 6 weeks with car wash soap (Griots Garage Brilliant Finish Car Wash) and a black micro-chenille wash mitt. Light scrubbing with the wash mitt was used each time and then rinsed with water and dried.

Here's what the tires look like after 6 weeks:

This is the side with the DP Tire Coating.

Conclusion - Some of the initial gloss was lost but both sides look about the same after 6 weeks. I was hoping for a little more gloss after just 6 weeks. In fact, the tires that were on this car previously had TS Tire Coating on them and they were glossier than these after a longer period of time.

I would attribute the loss of the gloss of these new tires mainly due to absorption of the dressing from the new rubber. It's a good idea to apply more coats to a brand new tire.

I will be applying an additional coat or two on the tires and will continue to give updates.

They seem to have the same level of gloss now, it's a little harder to tell on the initial pictures, they look about the same. Did you feel that one was glossier at the time of application, or were they about the same?

It seems like there is not much difference between these products.

Thanks 4 the review.

Thanks for the review.. very helpful.

which product was easier to apply? Since both look very close I will chose the easiest to apply.
Thanks

I've been waiting for Tufshine to wear off on my mustang so I can apply the DP coating. Thanks for the review Frank!

I am looking forward to long term results. Thanks for the review.

These were my initial observations from my 1st post on new tires for a 2003 Toyota Sienna Van (link above) without doing a side by side comparison of the two coatings:

Taken from my review above..."The DP Tire Coating seemed to spread a little better and more uniformly than the Tuf Shine Tire Coating. Also seems to be a little shinier. I'm interested to see the longevity."

When applying the two coatings to the new tires on the 2000 Camry I didn't pay too much attention to the application process and I really didn't notice much of a difference since I was more interested in the longevity of the DP Tire Coating.

After applying the two coatings (DP & TS) to the new tires on the 2000 Camry, I would say that the initial gloss on both coatings was very similar.

To me, on these new Michelin tires, it was about the same.

Thanks for sharing, nice review my friend:)

So, it would seem these two products are pretty similar, so the logical approach would be to buy by price, which surprisingly gives the nod to Tuf Shine (that's for the coating only, not evaluating any cleaners or kits).

I said this from he beginning. The DP stuff is crazy expensive compared to TS.

It's interesting that PBMG has taken that tack with this product, as I thought the DP line was supposed to be an affordable, no frills, bulk kind of line. Of course in the meantime Pinnacle, Wolfgang and Blackfire have all become available in bulk.

March 1, 2015 - Another Comparison Between Tuf Shine Tire Clearcoat vs DP Tire Coating.

I decided to do a more thorough comparison between TSTC & DPTC. This time I will apply both on each tire, the left half of the tire with TSTC and the right half with DPTC.

I wanted a tape that was strong enough to stay on the tires during the cleaning process therefore yellow electrical tape was used to separate the two halves.

The tires were driven on top of 2x6 pieces of wood in order to clean and coat the bottom of the tires without having to move the car.

These tires were previously coated with DP Tire Coating (see previous posts on this thread). The tires will be cleaned again for this comparison.

Front Passenger Tire
The left side of the tire will be cleaned with TS Tire Cleaner since TS Coating will be used on the left side and the right side will be cleaned with DP Tire Cleaner & Restorer since it is recommended to be used before applying DPTC. Both sides will be hand scrubbed with the Tuf Shine Tire Brush.

The TS Tire Cleaner was sprayed on the left side and DP Tire Cleaner on the right side. The cleaners were just sprayed on the tire, no scrubbing was done yet. The DP Tire Cleaner seemed to produce slightly more brown foam than the TS Tire Cleaner. I would give the DP Tire Cleaner a slight edge in this step. It's hard to tell from this picture since I sprayed the DP first and then the TS, some of the brown foam on the DP side had already dried by the time I took the picture.

White foam was visible on the right side (DP side) after the 2nd round of spraying, scrubbing and rinsing, indicating the tire was clean.

White foam was also visible on the left side (TS side) after the 2nd round of spraying, scrubbing and rinsing.
One more round was done on each side just to make sure the tire was cleaned. A total of three rounds were done on each side with their respective cleaners.

Rear Passenger Tire
The rear passenger tire will be cleaned with TS Tire Cleaner only. I wanted to see if using TS Cleaner would affect the results of the DP Tire Coating over time. Three rounds of spraying, scrubbing and rinsing will be done on this tire also.

The front passenger tire has been cleaned and dried and is now ready for the coatings. TS coating will be applied on the side with the "T" and DP coating will be applied on the side with the "_".

A dedicated tire brush applicator will be used for each coating.

DPTC being applied on the right side of the tire.

DPTC has a "blueish" color when being applied but it is white when coming out of the bottle. The "blueish" color quickly disappears when dried.

TSTC being applied on the left side of the tire. TSTC has a "whiteish" color when being applied and it is also white when coming out of the bottle.

The temperature was 83 degrees and a 13 mph east wind coming from the ocean during application. The coatings dried pretty quick between coats but the Blaster Side Kick was used to speed up the drying process and the forced air helped the coatings get into all the nooks & crannies of the tire.

In Conclusion - My personal thoughts

Both of the tire cleaners were very similar in strength and hard to tell the difference between the two but I think I would give a very slight edge to the DP Tire Cleaner.

The spread-ability of the two coatings was also very similar but the DP Tire Coating was a little more "liquidy" than the TS Tire Coating and a little easier to spread.

The final outcome and shine was very similar between the two coatings. I couldn't tell the difference between the two.

Stay tuned - I will be updating the progress as time goes on.

Great job Frank. I really appreciate the documentation. Once I get to detailing, I can't stop for pictures. I recently bought the DP cleaner and coating as well as Black Pearl. Would you be interested in trying some Black Pearl for testing?

Thank you! I would be interested in testing Black Pearl but I don't think I would post a comparison out of respect for AG since they don't sell it.

I understand. If you wanna try it for personal testing, shoot me a PM. I'm going to attempt to spray it and the DP here later in the month.

Hey guys how critical is it to use tufshine tire cleaner before applying the tufshine clear coat. I kinda cheaped out and got wolfgang tire and wheel cleaner instead so that I could continue to use it in the future. Can I make it work?

After reading more I see I should stay tuned for my answer.

The key is getting the tire as clean as possible before applying the TS Tire Clearcoat.

WG Tire Cleaner is not as strong as the TS so it make take a little longer to get the tire cleaned.

When you see white foam as your cleaning your tire, that's a good indication that your tire is clean.
