Dirty Paint/Hood

The Hood/Paint overall on my Tahoe (Pewter) is pretty dirty. It has swirls, and some embedded dirt that makes the hood look foggy. What do I need to remove this? I don't have a polisher and don't really want one either.

Could I used Duragloss 501? Do I need clay bar? Does it need compound? Can the products be used by hand to solve the issues.

Go ahead and post some pictures if you can. That will help. In general a wash with a very gentle soap and clay bar (with quick detailed or the soap suds from the wash) will help give you sense of what your next steps would be.

The whole car isn't as bad as this, only the hood. The rest just has swirls and a little dull.

If you're not interested in machine polishing, then I would assume you'd be happy with just getting the paint smoother and bringing some shine back right?
Wash, clay and polish (by hand) with a product like Klasse (red bottle) Your paint will be clean, smooth to the touch and Klasse will remove most of the oxidation and help restore some clarity to your paint.

You can get a lot of it off without machine. It is the paint correction which for all intents and purposes needs a machine. Washing gets the loose dirt off. Claying gets the above surface bonded contaminants. This should give you a real sense of things.

From your pictures it looks like a lot of industrial fallout/chemicals. The Claying will help with that. The other trick is to put your hand in a plastic baggie and gently rub your fingers over the surface. My guess it will feel very rough to the touch.

You should be able to make a big improvement by hand with DG501. Claying is optional, as this doesn't seem like something you're passionate about, but claying will remove a lot of dirt by itself.

It sounds like you've located DG501 locally, go for it! Get a microfiber hand applicator to apply.

I haven't but have heard nothing but good things about it, and I have no problem claying it. I would wash, clay, then hit it with the 501 correct?

Not that I know of. I've owned it for 12 of the 15 years of its existence.

You can totally do it by hand. That's why I put in my response (by hand ). Yes DG will work also. I just threw Klasse out there as an option because it can be found at some places off and it cleans and protects pretty damn good. Also like the look of Klasse on silver/grey colored vehicles.

Napa only had Meguiers compound, would that work? Anything I can find at the common store?
