BF Blackice Haze

Hello all,

I recently performed a full detail on my black BMW (wash, decon, clay, polish (Reflect), sealed with BFWD). Everything looked great at this point. Never willing to settle, I applied BF Midnight sun a week later (after washing). Taking things to another level, I then applied BF Blackice (by hand) on the hood of the car on top of the BFMS about 3 weeks later. Up to this point the finish was still in top shape. I perform 2 bucket washes about twice a week and the car is garage kept. I was amazed by the results of the blackice. Compared to the BFMS, it gave the hood a wet/slick look.

About a day after applying the blackice the problems began. I noticed a layer of haze on the hood. I concluded that this might have been the result of applying the blackice too thick since I did it by hand. I then cleaned the hood with P21s paintwork cleaner and reapplied a very thin coat of blackice with DA. Unfortunately, the haze returned and now I am perplexed. It comes off with a QD and spray wax, but returns less than 24 hours later. It's worth noting that we have experienced high humidity and 80+ degree temperatures since I have applied the blackice.

Any theories about what is causing this? Remedies? I am really interested in sticking with Blackice, as it seems like a phenomenal product, but...
 
Blackfire products are awesome. I have their Midnight Sun Paste wax and used to have BlackICE. Just a guess and it may be that you are putting on a "synthetic" wax on top of a carnauba wax (non-synthetic Midnight Sun). That would be the problem. Again, my theory.

If it were me I would just re-do the (strip and re-apply) the hood or wherever you applied BlackICE over Midnight Sun.

My guess you applied a sealant, wax and then a sealant/wax which my be causing the problem.

I would just apply the sealant and then a wax with either Midnight Sun or BlackICE.

If it was me, IMO Midnight Sun would be the better choice. I am not a fan of synthetic waxes from 1st hand experience. As I said before, I USED to have BlackICE. Midnight Sun I still have.

Either way, good luck on what you do and please let us know the results and post so we can learn from this in the future.

Too much wax and sealant on the surface. More is not always better.

P21S Gloss Enhancing Polish may not be strong enough to remove everything you applied. I would try wiping the paint down with a 15% solution of alcohol at least 2 or 3 times, and then wash it using a stronger dilution of your favorite car wash soap. Don't be temped to use Dawn, as in my experience it will not remove All Finish Paint Protection. It will however leave a film on the surface that will make you think it removed the sealant (water will lay flat).

While Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection and Midnight Sun are a great combination and play very well together ("Wet-Ice Over Fire"), BlackICE is so packed full of polymers and wax that it should only be used on its own, meaning you shouldn't apply it over a sealant or even another carnauba wax for that matter.

Strip everything off and pick which product or combination of products you like best. If the car is black, then I would personally go with BlackICE on its own. You will receive outstanding protection (5 months is conservative) and a shine that is second to none.

Thanks Kamakaz. Although I initially applied Blackice over Midnight Sun, I subsequently striped everything via P21s paintwork cleaner and applied a thin coat of Blackice - to no avail. Do you think that the P21s was insufficient? The hood felt very clean/striped post- P21s.

Thanks for the advice Nick! It looks like I will be busy this weekend!
 
Rather than going back through a full detail, maybe try a test panel first, like the trunk lid. Strip it down, light polish to remove BFWD, then IPA and BlackIce. See how that looks through next week and then decide if you are going to re-do the whole car.
 
Do you live somewhere hot?

Do you wipe off the haze and it reappears - horizontal panels and hood being the worse?

This is "ghosting" or "sweating". Some waxes just do this in the heat shortly after application. It's usually only noticeable on black cars. It's usually most apparent on the hood - because the hood gets heat from the engine and from the sun.

The problem is usually solved after the car is washed a few times.

But I also wouldn't be layering all those products. Stick with just BFWD & MS.

I've experienced exactly what you're describing on my BMW's hood (E93 - Black Sapphire Metallic) after using BlackIce and a few other waxes. The rest of the car is fine, but a haze appears after a few days and seems to come and go with temperature differences. It's maddening. Like others have said, it will go away with time. Sorry!

Did you have a sealant under the Blackice?
 
It's about 125 degrees and humid as all get up in my garage in Tampa right now and I have BF Black Ice on my GC and no hazing so not a heat problem. And I just applied it two weeks ago and it was 95 out and 90% humidity. I have to agree with the above comments on two many products, too thick etc.

I have BF BI on top of PBL Sealant.

The first time, no i did not. The second time however I put a layer of BFWD first and then followed up with BlackICE. By doing so, the haze did not reappear and it made applying a *THIN* layer of BlackICE super easy.

I didn't mention this before because Nick specifically said to use BlackICE on it's own w/out a sealant underneath. However the BFWD + BlackIce combo worked nicely for me... Sorry Nick!
