Help with DG 601 and 105...and maybe 601

Hi Guys,

I bought a 105 and chose not to get the 601 to apply first. I plan to top the 105 with one of Collinite waxes.

But I've read some posts where people talk of mixing the 601 and 105. Are they mixing and applying as one product?

Also, in the last two weeks I've used BFTPS and then BFGEP. Any benefit to trying DG 501?

Um, yes, if you used BFGEP as your last step you removed the protection from the Total Polish n' Seal. Except for Duragloss and Zaino (and a few other outliers) when something is called a "polish" it's an abrasive (or sometimes non-abrasive as in the GEP's) or cleaner.

So if you use the GEP it should be followed by an LSP (Last Step Product--wax or sealant), if you used the TPS first the GEP is a redundant step.

As far as the DG, they now suggest the mixing of 601 with the "polish" in a 4:1 ratio (4 parts polish to 1 part 601)...think of it kind of like mixing Zaino with ZFX. And yeah, it's worth doing but if you don't have it you don't need it.

Thank you for the mixing info. I appreciate it.

I knew GEP would undo TPS, but was ok with that as I wasn't that impressed with the TPS vs GEP.

Any benefit to using the 501?
 
The 601 bonding agent is great stuff. It's so easy, mix 4/1 and shake it up. It extends the DG sealant lifetime. I have one car that I use it like you, then top with Collinite.
 
Once you mix #601 with either #105/#501 or #111 it has about a 12 hr shelf life, so if you have extra left over, hit the glass and/or wheels with the extra. There's no need to apply it separately anymore now that someone mixed it together, big thanks to whomever that was!

Wow! I had no idea. Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to mix only a small amount.

So should I:

  1. Mix 601/501 and then Collinite;
  2. 501 then 601/105, then Collinite; or just
  3. 691/105 then Collinite.

Also, should I use orange or yellow GG BOSS pads with my BOSS 15 to apply 501 should I use 501??

Is there a benefit to mixing the 601/105 other than a little time saving?

I also considered going with the 601/105 + Collinite on top, but wasn't sure if I would be removing the DG combo by adding the wax. I instead settled for topping the 601/105 with DG Aquawax after every wash.
 
You wouldn't remove the DG sealant / 601 when you apply Collinite. Collinite has no polish / cleaning properties.

I would only use 501 if you need a stronger cleaner. I've found 105 to have mild cleaning ability but to be a very good sealant. If you were to use all 3 use 501/601, 105/601, then one of collis. But IMO using both 501 and 105 is redundant if you are topping them.

Or you could skip the colli and top with 111/601, which has no cleaning ability but is an excellent sealant.

Would doing a 105/601 after doing a 501/601 offer any more shine or wet look on a white Audi once I top it with Collinite?

I don't believe so, your paint will take the characteristics of the Collinite as that would be the LSP.

For example, on my truck I applied 111, and that has the candy shell look IMO, but I ended up topping it with colli 915 a couple weeks later (only because I can't leave well enough alone) and it left it with the warmer carnauba look.
 
Years ago I was taking car of a funeral home's cars and used to do the 501/601 combo and then I would follow it with Collinite. It gave them great protection at the time (before coatings).
 
I think I'll try the 501/601 and skip the 105 for fear of undoing what I just did with the 501. I'll go right to my LSP.

Debating whether that should be the 845, 915 or FK1000p.

I was going to top 105/601 with the Collinite 476, (I have a full size truck and don't have many opportunities to get out and wax/seal the paint) but really not sure I buy the effectiveness of layering these different products.

But what do I know...

Hi Jetman,

It's actually quite a mini-saga.

I bought my car a few months ago as a 1 year old CPO with 10k miles.

In the last two weeks (after washing by hand and then using a blue fine Nanoskin kit) I used my new Flex 3401 to first apply BFTPS - which I did not think was the best shine I'd seen. Then I used it to apply a product I was more familiar with - BFGEP and felt the shine was noticeable better.

Having the OCD that I do, that was no where near enough to satisfy my obsessing. So now I want to try DG and will top it with either the Collinite I've purchased or FK1000p. I will forego the BFWD wax I was going to use as my LSP.

Is DG superior to BF in my opinion on my particular car? I don't know. I'll find out when I'm done. And if not? I enjoyed the journey and working on the car. :dblthumb2:

Definitely post back with your results.

I am going with the 105/601 combo on the wife's car and the collinite 476 on my truck. I am very interested to see how they compare in terms of longevity.
 
Yeah - I'm curious how I like the look of the DG compared to BWGEP. I wonder if anyone can comment if they've ever compared the two?
