Serious clouding on the trunk lid of our Black, 2008 BMW 550i.

Can only see it at night or faintly in daylight.

Impervious to my light compound and buffer.

Stair step with more aggressive compound or just have it repainted?

Thanks

Wow! That looks really bad, even for 7 years old.

Is the car alwasy parked outside?

  1. What are you using for a buffer?
  2. What are you using for products?

:)

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Mike.

Daily driver, parked outside M-F, 8-5
Otherwise garaged.

I have a 6" variable speed buffer/polisher with 3M Perfect-It #05738 pads and a 3" Griot's random orbital with black foam finishing pads and red waxing pads.

I've only used Meguiar's G17216 Ultimate Compound so far.

Obviously, I've started very mildly, and perhaps should go ahead with a more aggressive compound.

A trunk lid repaint is always an option. (Got a great deal on the car, so I left some room for upgrades/repairs)

Here are a couple more pics taken in reflected sunlight: (and they're only visible in an angled reflection)

In all honesty, my advise would be to have the trunk lid resprayed. There's no way you'll be able to rectify that deep of oxidation without completely removing the CC. Save yourself the hassle and disappointment and just go for the respray.

Thanks for the input.

At this juncture I won't really be disappointed or consider it a hassle to work on it.

I'm more curious than anything and am looking at it as a learning experience.

If you're backup plan is a repaint, then there's no reason to not try to fix it first. When Mike was asking whether the car was outside all the time, you seem to indicate that you are not the original owner so you don't really know the history of the car, right?

That spot in the middle looks like it could just be some water spotting, the other spot is a little more ambiguous. Certainly you are in a part of the country where if the previous owner had the car outside all the time it could have failed the clear.

As far as your supplies...forget the Griot's 3", you won't be able to do any correcting with that (well, you can but it's going to take a lot of time). It sounds like you have a rotary but only a finishing pad (same for your 3"). You are going to need a more aggressive pad to go with that Ultimate Compound.

Do you know if that is the infamous BMW Jet Black? Because that paint is impossibly soft...but that's another problem from the one you have right now.

As always, I defer to Mike Phillips, not only because this is his sub-forum, but because he's polished more cars than I've even thought about polishing.

Yes, second owner and 2008 BMW Schwarz 2.

Previous owner lived in another part of the state with high heat and lower humidity than here in the primordial swamps of SETX.

And I'm certain none of it is water spots. Appears to be clear clouding.

Thanks again for the input and taking the time to offer it.

Are you any good with that rotary? If so, get maybe an orange and white pad and go at it. If not, you can get some MF pads for your GG 3" and something like FG400 or Wolfgang Uber and see what happens, or get yourself a new DA and see what you can do.

Possibly there is another member in your area and maybe he could help you experiment with getting those spots out.

I don't know if that "Schwarz 2" color is the infamous "Jet Black".

Thanks for the info.

I can operate a rotary and will pick up a couple of other pads.

Yep, it's the infamous "Jet Black".

Had to give it a shot.

50% improvement

meh

Gonna have the lid resprayed.

Wow, that car looks really great! Except for all that splatter on the back window.
