Is it ok to use HE detergent (it says free and clear on it, but the brand is not) on MF towel before first use and after each use? Would they be ruined if I don't use a MF specific detergent?
I just want to wash it once so I can get the tags off the lower end towels, and I also got higher priced ones without tags.

No you don't need to use a MF specific detergent, a "free and clear" should be fine. Not sure what washing has to do with tag removal though.

I wonder if the OP has towels with tags that aren't sewn in but glued on? If that's the case, the tags need to be peeled off before washing, otherwise the tags come off but the adhesive "sets" into the fabric during the heat of the wash&dry cycle.

The tags are sewn on the general consensus I read was it is easier to remove the tag after a wash without ripping the towel. I noticed the tags are softer after the wash.

That's what I was first thinking but when he said he has ones without tags, I just presumed the "lower end" towels he mentioned were sewn in.

Yeah, but they are tyvek, I don't think they will be any easier to remove after washing, to be honest.

Just cut them off. Tearing them off can rip the borders.

it's always a good idea to remove the tags of the microfiber towels before washing. if they are sewn in use some cuticle scissors (been using them for many years) to cut them off. you can get them at your local 99cent only stores...
