Is Expensive MF Cleaners Needed?

I've been using free and clear tide.

My fluffy towel aren't super soft as they once were. But they are 2 years old... I used to use MF soap before. Dunno really.

I do use vinegar every wash. And if they are soiled bad, a cap of APC.

is adding vinegar really necessary?....I've never done this so I'm just curious if it makes a difference or not

I have to admit, Ive tried DP Microfiber cleaner, WG cleaner, Micro restore, and Tide free and clear and Ill be damned if I can tell a difference in the cleaning ability and or post wash softness of any of the above.

IMO:
Not really a necessity; but: using distilled white
vinegar (acetic acid) in extra rinse cycles is a
good thing...both before, and after, washing
microfiber (MF) towels:

•Before you start washing your MF-towels:
-to remove any prior detergents or residues
from the washing machine's tub.

•After washing/in the final rinse cycle:
-to ensure no detergents/waxes/chemicals/etc.
residues remain in the MF-towels fibers;
-and as a "natural fabric softener".

I have always been pleased with Micro-Restore. I was curious to see if a dedicated microfiber detergent was better, so I decided to experiment.

Earlier in the week, I cleaned my vehicle via a rinseless wash and ten microfiber towels. I washed those ten microfiber towels using Tide Free and Gentle on a heavy wash cycle. I removed the microfiber towels after the wash cycle was completed and wiped down the inside of the washing machine drum with a paper towel. I then washed the same ten microfiber towels using half an ounce of Micro-Restore, on a heavy wash cycle. After the wash cycle was completed, I noticed a "ring of dirt" around the washing machine drum.

So, did Micro-Restore out perform Tide Free and Gentle or was the "ring of dirt" a result of washing the towels twice?

Another user of Tide Free here. I have not had any issues. I wash them on heavy duty cycle with hot water. I fluff dry for about 8 minutes on low then hang dry.

I have noticed that 3D really does leave my plush edgeless mf towels very soft and clean and when combined with its price, I don't see myself buying anything else👍

Seems like people here that use the laundry detergent feel like they are washing their towels for free.

What is your cost per load using Tide Free & clear compared to the $18 a gallon 3D MF cleaner?

Do you all use only 2oz like when using a MF cleaner or use what the mfg considers a "loads" worth? Cause at my local prices TF&C would be about .10 per oz and Towel Kleen is about .14 per oz. Interested to hear some answers.

If it is only .06 more per load for me to use a product that is supposed to be better for the fibers you are cleaning it seems worth it to me still

I like Tide Free better than special microfiber cleaners. Plus my wife buys the Tide!

3D If I remember correctly calls for 2 oz, full load, that's 64 loads.

128/2 = 64 loads, 18$/64 = 0.28.

I don't believe any of the mentioned are superior to one or the other. If you get nice results from one, most likely you will not compare to, a competitive product (immediately) for comparison. So month down the road you try another, now were relying on memory, a time ago to make the comparison.

What's important is "following" the instructions from Rag Co. or similar precisely, so as to get the best results (consistently) from your choice of product.

Your washing machine manual, or other source should describe what a full load is, most likely dry weight of fabric ( X#'s fabric = full load ), this would then correspond to two oz detergent from say Wolfgang. Less than full = 1 oz.

Looking at this previously maybe your talking a nickel in diff (big deal), how far should one take this. Include shipping, taxes, gasoline to the supermarket. It becomes trivial, as long as you get the results, your happy with. If you use a Tide or All, your not going to see significant changes by switching to 3D or Wolfgang.

Many here swear by the usage of "vinegar"* perhaps this helps, but this should go (front loaders) Fabric softener bin. Normally for front loaders, fabric softener is added to the rinse cycle, which is where you want the vinegar to be added.

Also to get consistent results a clean machine needs to be used, no telling what mamma ran through it, so I often times precede MF washing with a "cleaning" described in the manual.

I'm not doing this as a business, so I can afford the time to rack "air" dry.

Vinegar - Not advocated by labeled product, nor ( I think) Rag Co. instructions. Mfg's want you to use there product, not have to use there product plus something else. They would know the powers of vinegar & design that into there product, or be less successful. I think some underestimate the design, somehow we can tweak it better than the mfg.

Kinda like those oil additives, that will do so much, all hype.

I've found that you really don't need 2 oz per load with 3D Towel Kleen so that will reduce the cost even more. Since I started using it a couple of years ago I also do not need to do the final rinse with vinegar as the towels are already very soft and the Towel Kleen is designed to not leave residue behind.

The cost is trivial unless your comparing a small container to the large size. Tide & All free, remove residual, or rinse clean, so as to help in being, more friendly to skin. I believe the vinegar, is just psychological.

Using the same detergent & testing, it would be very difficult to discern one with vinegar rinse, & one without.

•Acid/Base reaction(s): Scientific fact, or myth?

•Acetic acid {@50-grain strength} is too mild
to harm fabrics; but, it is strong enough to
neutralize the alkalies in detergents and/or
detergents' residues.

•Which begs the question:
-Are residue-free fibers/fabrics "softer" than
fibers/fabrics that are residue-coated?

I have used All free and Clear and a couple mf specific cleaners and the towels came out the same..

I was wondering why most regular detergents are thick like syrup and mf detergents are watery. There must be some difference .

ARE expensive mf cleaners needed...no, because 3D has a gallon under $20.00 that works damn good👍

You took the words right out of my mouth!! :xyxthumbs:

Anyone that is skeptical about 3D Towel Kleen should really give it a try. You'll immediately notice a difference in softness & cleanliness and they'll end up lasting longer too! Even cheap Costco towels. :)

Whoa, just posted that last night, check the forum today and there is 34 posts!

ORIGINAL Tide doesn't look like it has any perfumes or stuff in it. Or would Tide Free and Clear be better.

Tide Free and Clear is the one you want.

The Tide Original actually does have a scent. If you take a look at the product info it's their "Original" fresh scent. Hehe.
