Hello,
Please help me decide which one to buy. Porter Cable 7424 or "Ultimate Detailing Machine". I've never used a machine, always done it by hand.
I'm interested in the pro's and con's of each.
Thanks in advance,
JRF

Welcome JRF61.
I use the PC7424. From what I've read the UDM was developed to improve on the PC's traits, more power, less vibration are a couple. Now if the PC is all that you have known it's great. I love mine and it gets the job done. Hopefully some guys will chime in that have used both.

I have only use the PC but I would say go with the UDM, for sure it has more power(20% i think). I felt that the PC was underpowered. I think most people will recommend the UDM.

I would definitely grab the UDM over the 7424. The extra power and reduced vibration make it worth it. Otherwise they are basically identicial in form/function. Plus, the UDM is on sale right now!

Both machines are good....I have not used the UDM ..but heard its good..and also heard it has its down falls....it does claim more power...thats a plus...

The PC is a tried and proven machine as far as performance and longevity...I can go to a site and get replacement parts for the PC...I see no pages where you get replacement parts for the UDM ..like brushes...switches..housing...bearings...or what ever part you may need later down the road....

I use 5 and 5.5 inch pads on the PC and vibration is very little compared to a 6.5 inch pad.....

I'm sure that the UDM is a great tool but I have not seen any specs on who makes the motor, and parts for it. For now it may be great but it does not have a quality name like Porter Cable on it. What happens with the UDM after a couple of years of use versus the PC?

That has yet to be seen. The UDM was rushed to the market, IMO, and the first version showed that. Now version 1.2, per se, is out with a few modifications which the owners of the first versions complained about. With these fixes now in place, the UDM gets my nod over the PC 7424. Speeds 1-5 are similar on the two machines but speed 6 is like overdrive on the UDM. Plus getting the UDM to bog down is a lot harder. The UDM is a close to a clone of the PC as you can get so I'm not too worried about durability.

I just ordered the UDM. From what I've heard I'll be very happy with it. Who knows I may just order the PC just to have both. I'm odd like that though...lol

I am happy with my UDM. I am just waiting for the new switch. If you buy it now, it comes with the new switch since Meghan noted so in a thread. Whichever one you get, you will be satisfied! I just like how the UDM comes with a bag and a backing plate and a white polishing pad that you can actually use.
