Customer complaining about fallout

One of my customers has a white Ford Escape. I do a wash and seal twice a year for him.

Every time I see this car it has a ton of rusty fallout on it. I believe it comes from the brakes but can't say for certain. But these specs of rust really show on the white paint, so I do have to take the time to clay them off with every detail.

I use Powerlock. I really doubt the problem is your sealant.

He maybe one of those X-ray vision clients that are a pita to deal with.just fix it don't ruin your reputation around town then avoid him.

This. Too many people drop a car off and can't even give you the time of day to do a walkthrough. When they come to pick it up, all of a sudden they got their doctorate in detailing and have cleared their schedule just to inspect your work; the kid is just gonna have to wait at pre-school, mommy's got a car, fine toothed comb and magnifying glass.

If he's taking his car to a car wash occasionally rather than taking the initiative to hand wash it or pay someone else to do it on a regular basis, then he is:

1. Not as particular about quality as he claims
2. Not as knowledgeable about contaminants as he thinks
3. Probably looking for a handout after 3 months of neglect

You can't expect a car to still look just detailed after 3 month unless you are diligent about maintaining it and/or have a coating applied. I suspect the fallout isn't any worse after 3 months than 5 year, he just knows what smooth paint feels like now.

Make him happy, then make yourself happy by not dealing with him again.

Also, the general rule is to under promise and over deliver; not talk yourself up about how you are the only person in town that can clay a car properly, that's setting yourself up for a disappointed customer at some point. I suspect there may have inadvertently been some bragging about WGDGPS too that is leading the customer to think it's bulletproof.

I told him that I will meet up with him one weekend so I can see for myself. He's told me that it's only been washed a couple times through a touch less wash so maybe that's why. Still doesn't make sense that it's worse than before. He's not being an ass about it and I want to keep him happy so if it means wasting 2 hours of my time and a few bucks of product, oh well

Have any of you guys had issues with wolfgang paint sealant? I'm guessing it's Popular sealant since it's so easy to use

I see you mentioned you clayed it, but did you use Iron-X?

I don't use iron-x or ever have used it. Is it worth using? It seems like the nano mitt gets the vehicles really smooth and I can't see anything in the paint

Just to add something, sometimes there could be a large amount of fallout of something simply based on where the car was parked one time. I have had my car covered in fallout from I think a warehouse near where I work when I parked someplace different. It went from silky smooth to sandpaper in a day.

And to answer the above question, yes, IronX is definitely worth using. Claying does not remove all or sometimes any iron particles off the paint. IronX will. And whats even better, its virtually effortless and on a light colored car, you can see it working!

While it's true, clay will remove industrial fallout, pollen, tree sap and other contaminants that have bonded to the paint, it's other purpose is to create a smooth surface as prep for further applications. (i.e. compound, polish, coatings, etc..)...

Iron-X is designed to chemically decontaminate the car and remove exactly what your customer is complaining about. Iron/rail dust and industrial fall out that bonds. It is especially visible on white cars. On a white car, after dwelling for 3 - 5 minutes, it will bleed like a stuck pig.

There is a lot of discussion in Mike's article, The Aggressive Approach to Washing a Car.

Yes, you should look into Iron-X if your customer has a white car and is complaining about fall out and rail dust and build it into your wash routine.
