Was half way through polishing this Mustang when the backing plate decided to fly off while polishing the door. This could have ended badly but no damage was done. Scared the heck out of me though.

was it making any unusual noises before coming apart?

Right before the backing plate and spindle few off it started to violently wobble. Just enough time for me to get it off the paint. Looks like the snap ring failed since the snap ring groove looks OK.

Ouch! This reminds me of seeing axle c-clip failures at the dragstrip, which causes the axle shaft and wheel to fall off... it's never pretty. The good news is, Griot's has an excellent warranty. I'm glad you got lucky in regards to any potential paint damage.

like anything other polisher (or anything else for that matter) that is man made, there are going to be some issues (small percentage) but it happens sometimes. know that Griot's will take care of you with any of their products, and their customer service and warranty are top notch...

That's where their legendary warranty comes into play. Good to hear that no damage was done.

I had this exact same issue happen to me last year while using my 21. They did send me a new unit which was great, however I never really trusted using the machine again after that. I ended up selling the new G21 they sent me and bought another Rupes 21 to replace it. Glad you didn't have any damage as a result of the failure.

Have I missed something or is just the G21 having problems. I can't remember this many issues with the G15

It should be noted, since there hasn't been any update, that Griot's Garage promptly took care of the OP by replacing the machine - no questions asked. :dblthumb2:

me too, though the GG6 is awesome too!

I haven't used my old 8mm DA with a 5" backing plate since I upgraded to the G21. You could practically weld the 3" backing plate to my old polisher and I wouldn't even be mad about it. Lol.

I haven't heard of any known problems with any of the Griots polishers lately. Just your normL bad apple that's bound to come up every once in a while. I imagine there's hundreds if not thousands of hardcore lurkers out there. Because it seems like pulling teeth to find actual real deal reviews or thoughts from anyone in the world about the Griots Boss polishers. You could literally count the total number on both hands. I think that's lame.

Just an FYI,
Griots Garage went above and beyond to get me taken care of. Got a new polisher and have had no issues thus far with the new G21.
One thing is for sure, Griot's customer service, as well as autogeeks has been great. If feel much better knowing Griot's stands behind their products like that.

I'm hoping I just got a bad apple as it was less than a week old and had been only used twice before it broke.

anything man made (from any company) is not going to be perfect and there may be some issues/problems (with GG is a small percentage among it's competition as well) that could arise at any given time. rest assured, Griot's Garage has some of the best customer service and warranty around if such problems happen. know that you are completely covered and they have your back. money well spent with some assurance/insurance... :props:

Do you work for griots?

I wonder what Griots would do if one of their machines grenaded and a car like this classic was damaged?

Has anyone seen this happen with a Rupes machine? I don't think I have.
