question for those who own dogs...

We have one of each and always have. Typically boxers. After much heart break losing them over the years I had to take a break from full boxers so now we have Pit Mix - male and a Boxadore - Half yellow lab Half Fawn Boxer - Female.

Females have always seemed to be the braver more protective ones in our family. Still stands even with the girl only being 1 yr old. She is the first to contront a noise or person without fear.

Males seem to be more tolerant of kids though. Not sure if either of these is typical but just our findings.

Looks like he's in time out LOL

LOL! That's Nico and he's "special", but we love him more than anything. He was our second foster dog and when we picked him up something was off with him. It turned out he had some neurological issues and we fell in love with him and couldn't give him up in fear someone would turn him away because of his condition.

He was actually talking to the tree there...or just staring at it and making noises like he was talking. ;)

I've had small and big dogs currently we have a tiny one. As long as you love it, any dog is cool! :) But i tend to go with girl dogs, just always found them to be more mellow than all the boy dogs i've had! Oh and to share, here's "Pepper" she's a chihuahua/dachshund mix. She was the runt of her litter when they got dropped off at the shelter! She loves her cave bed, can't get her out of it!

NICE!!

Agree on the female dogs. However, the wife & I had a male Pit named Harley before we were even married that was the most mellow dog on earth. He was about 85 pounds, and when he met another medium to large sized dog, he'd sit down to let them smell him.

But.............. When he met any toy breed, he'd flop down on his back, and let them sniff, lick, climb on him, whatever. :)

Miss him dearly. 1997-2010. :/

Male or female, you'll find each other. We have two females, corgi and corgi mix, and a male sheltie. All of which are rescues.... Strongly encourage you to go the rescue route. I volunteered at a shelter and tons of pure breeds being turned in everyday...

Good luck!

LISTEN TO THIS!!

People who, on a whim pay big money for puppies of a particular breed, do TWO huge disservices to dogs.

ONE: You enable scumbag puppy mills to stay in business. These pieces of human garbage treat dogs like egg-laying chickens to produce puppies with quick turn-around for profit. Problem is, unlike reputable breeders, they inbreed the dogs, and all kinds of problems ensue. Sickening.

TWO: By paying this money for an inbred, and sickly mutation that these puppy mills produce, you are ignoring (and hence abandoning) some of the best dogs you could ever find at your local shelter.

ADOPT!! AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHELTERS!!!!!!!!!!!

While you have had small dogs in the past, I think you need to go giant this time. There is something truly amazing and hard to describe when you have a huge dog in the family. Here is our baby girl. By the way, that is my wife and she is roughly 5'8"

I go by personality over sex. My female sheba inu/heeler mix is more protective and territorial than my esky mix male. Same with a female husky mix we had when compared to the Pyreneese male we also had at the time.

I also agree with adopting a shelter dog. If you want a specific breed, there are usually rescue groups for that breed. Petfinder is a great resource to use.

I also agree with the adopting/rescue dogs. 2 of ours are rescue dog and they are amazing!
