For you guys that do this for a living either part time or full time do you guys accept only cash or use a POS like square for accepting debit/credit cards?

I use square. Accept cash check or credit. I'd say maybe 25% of my customers pay by card. They do appreciate the convenience tho

To the people who accept alternative payment methods, what percentage of your customers pay with card? Do they do it on their own? Or is it more because you've made them aware that it's possible thanks to you being able to accept cards?

don't make a living at it so I do mainly cash but have an option for Square just in case. So far I've done either cash or Pay Pal friend transfers.

I use square and the customers think it's cool to use instead of handing over a pile of cash

PayPal Here.......customers love the option and it's not real frequent so i just write off the fees. They are pretty minimal anyway

I detail on the side and so far 100% of my customers have paid with credit card. So I really like Square for this. I just mark the price up a little to offset the 2.75% surcharge. They know I do and don't seem to mind for the convenience.

I've found in the past people trying to pay with cash will say, "oh, I only have XXX amount on me". When I give them the option to pay with a card they don't have an excuse to try and shortchange me.

I don't detail for a living but anyone who is offering said services IMO, get a square of PP card reader of some sort.
Why limit yourself .

No need to mark it up. It's just the cost of doing business IMO.
We're talking what - $8-$20 in merchant fees per charge.

That $8-20 dollars adds up real fast. At minimum of $8 for two transactions a week: $64 a month= $768 per year. $20 twice a week per charge = $160 per month, $1920 a year.

I say mark up the exact percentage or round down 1/2 or 1/4 percentage to make for an easy number. Eating the cost of the subscription or machine I say that is the cost of business, not the lost percentage. I never have had a problem paying the credit card percentage markup at local mom&pop businesses. I will pay cash most times on a large purchase if there is a 2-3% fee.

As a fair warning, most merchant agreements prohibit from adding additional markup for credit card processing. That said, unless you are reported, they generally only go after the high transaction merchants.

Would just adjust your overall price to factor people paying with card. If they don't it's just a little more profit. I have seen businesses give a cash discount however. So price you see is card which is THE normal common payment these days. Cash is discounted

Cash for first timers, check is acceptable for return customers

Disclaimer: I only do this on the side for extra money

If they cant afford it then why did they agree to the price beforehand? Does this work in restaurants? No you order the food and when the bill comes you pay the full price....

Personally i used to accept cash or checks at a discount price and to use a credit card is a 3% increase in price
