i use the paper backing of some skateboard griptape which is basically wax paper, nothing sticks to it...

The way I understand it the claymitt doesn't pull anything off, it shaves the contaminants off the paint and basically liquifies them for you to simply wipe off once you're done with the panel. If you've ever used a claymitt on a heavily contaminated white vehicle you'll see the claylube turn brown once you begin going to town on it.

Because the contaminates don't embed themselves into the nanoskin like they do with regular clay. That is why you need to keep kneeding/working the clay to get a fresh face and avoid dragging the same contaminates over the paint. The Nanoskin pulls them out, but doesn't hold on to them like clay does. This is why you are supposed to rinse off the nanoskin every so often, and also why you can keep using it after dropping it. Just spray/rinse it off and go back to work.

You can tell its working by following up with a baggy test to ensure all the contaminates are gone.

I've pretty much switched over completely to nanoskin type products rather than clay for 95% of my claying duties. The only place I still use regular clay is in tough to get to places like emblems, badges, etc.... where the bigger nanoskin products just can't get into like a piece of pliable clay can.

i find it mare's the paint compared to regular clay. though ive had some clay that mare's to

Yes, both clay and nanoskin type products will work to remove/strip/damage whatever wax or sealant is currently on the vehicle, which is why the claying step is one of the first steps in correcting paint issues, followed up by polishing and applying protection (wax/sealant/coating).

what about the pinnacle poly clay? they claim you can use it every day, im guessing they wouldnt claim that if it stripped wax.

Any clay will remove protection no matter how fine it is. Pinnacle description also advises of this

A finer clay will cause less marring and depending on paint condition it is possible to skip the polish step, moving straight to a protectant

I have a Nanoskin wash mitt and the 6.5in fine pad. Love both. I rinse them off after every panel in a bucket of ONR(my clay lube) to keep debris off as they do not absorb the debris like a clay bar. I have done about 12 decons with the 6.5in pad and it still looks brand new. I know at the shop the ones we have have done dozens and dozens of cars and still work great.
